"So, you're.. are you sure you'll be okay by yourself?" I asked. I couldn't help but be nervous about Asha heading home by himself.. he had no one to drive him.
It pained me to be unable to offer him a ride.. I walked to and from school every day, so my car was at home.
Asha nodded as he wheeled himself outside of the school doors with me. "I'll be fine," he said, giving an assuring smile. "I'm used to it."
I pursed my lips and nodded, squeezing my backpack straps. "Okay.. I just want to make sure."
Asha giggled and grabbed my free hand, giving it a warm squeeze. "Thank you for w-worrying about me, Cruz," he said. "It makes me h-happy."
I smiled shakily, my face warm as always. "Of course I worry. I care."
I squeeze his hand back, rubbing little circles on him.We stared at each other again. It was golden hour, which made his beautiful deep brown skin glow. The wind passing through the trees ruffled his hair and clothes, the shiny gold jewelry round his neck chiming wonderfully.
"I've.. g-gotta get going now," he uttered, finally breaking our trance. "My caretaker will be worried.."
"A-aye," I uttered. "Be safe."
Asha's hand slipped from my grasp as he turned to leave. He gave a little wave and started on his way down the sidewalk.
I sighed and started back to the school building when it hit me.
"Fuck, I'm so stupid..!" I groaned, grabbing my hair in annoyance.
I should've asked for his number!
I turned and watched Asha for a few seconds. He was long past the fence that marked the edge of the school's property.
I could still go ask him.. but that would be weird, wouldn't it? We already said goodbye and everything..
I'll ask him tomorrow, then. If I can muster it.
I jogged back up to the school and let myself inside.
I could hear talking and laughter of my teammates before I even entered the locker room.
I walked round the bend to the section my locker was in and saw Callum at his locker next to mine.
Only his and my locker were in this area, so that gave us the opportunity for a quiet chat before practice.
We were also further away from the commotion the other boys inevitably made in their own section.
Callum smiled at me after tugging his shirt over his face. He greeted me, his voice soft and barely audible as usual.
I smiled back as I placed my bag inside of the locker. "I heard you and Thomas are together, aye?"
"We're only talking," he uttered and began to twiddle his thumbs adorably. He had the biggest smile across his face, but he turned away. "I've given him hints, but he's a little dense."
I laughed, "give him a good punch across the face. He'll figure it out then." I gave him a pat on the shoulder as he left the locker room.
I quickly got dressed and went to follow.
"Aye, Cruz! Are you and that bloke in the chair all kissy-kissy now?" a certain boy shouted as I walked past the group still hanging around the bathrooms.
I said nothing and walked past the group.
All of his little friends began to coo like schoolchildren, exclaiming stupid shit about how 'that's so gay.'
