It was almost ten, which meant Jonathan was grumpily walking towards his English class. It was the same routine every other day, thanks to their block scheduling.

He walked in and sat in his usual seat, which was only a few seats away from the corner. The corner desk was consistently empty, but Jonathan couldn't bring himself to move desks.

Dave, their substitute in replacement for their teacher who had recently given birth, was handing out packets to the students. No one officially knew his last name, as he insisted everyone just call him Dave.

Sadly, in walked Casey and Carson who had made their relationship official. Jonathan rolled his eyes and finally started to play his friends back in iMessage games in hopes of distracting himself. He thought about playing Casey back, but decided that it was probably a bad idea.

What he didn't notice was Casey curiously glancing at him every now and then. She noticed his oversized hoodie, joggers, and Timberland boots. He wore the same clothes in a variation of colors every day. One time he wore jeans, but that was all.

Her eyes squinted as she saw him pull out a leather notebook. The outside looked brand new but she knew it wasn't. He opened the book and began scribbling inside.

Casey was curious what the journal was. It was rare to see anyone journal, let alone a boy.

She sighed, wishing that she could reach into the perplex mind of Jonathan Schlatt.
