The girls went weeks at a time without talking. It's not that they were fighting, or unhappy with each other, or even because they were busy. It was because they were worried about bothering the other person. They were worried about getting in each other's way.
As time went on, Delilah began to adjust. She walked into class with confidence and sat in the front row.
Amy thought she was doing better. Her grades improved and she tried to be social by communicating with her teachers. She felt like she was finally fitting in.
The following night, she began studying for a major test she had the following morning. *I always study with Lilah,* she thought. She remembered pacing back and forth her bedroom, teaching Lilah the lesson. *How am I suppose to get through the rest of this semester without reviewing with her?*
She began pacing back and forth through her dorm room, repeating the definitions on the notes over and over again. She pretended she was teaching Lilah, and continued to pace slowly back and forth. Then suddenly, her pacing got quicker, so quick that she eventually collapsed. Her legs were weak and she felt them crumble beneath her. She leaned up against the wall and hugged her knees. She rocked herself back and forth repeating to herself the same statement.
"I'm going to be fine, I'm going to be fine, I'm going to be fine."
It wasn't until after the third time she repeated that that she began to cry. She laid down on the carpet and soon she was sobbing. *I haven't cried this much since the day I left Lilah. Why am I crying so much, can't I stop crying? Why do the voices in my head keep telling me to do better? Why did they tell me to move away from Lilah? Because they thought they knew what was best for me. All my life I have listened to these voices and never made my own decisions,* she continued thinking. She reached the point where she could not take it anymore. She screamed, releasing all the voices and thoughts that were once bundled up in her head. Her roommate slowly opened the door.
