As I watched everyone prepare for the mission, I couldnt help but remember a much quieter period of my life, two years ago.
"November 2098, in the Yaba Barracks."
“Bro, they did it, the warp engine, its done” said my tiny friend for life, Ade.
"That is good bro, okay, now, let me sleep" I replied.
"Will you please get up! the captain is calling us"
"Ade, you're a first lieutenant and I'm a second"
"So?" He replied with a grin.
"I'm your senior, therefore, I order you to allow me to sleep"
"Tobi.........the Captain is walking over already"
"Shit!" I shouted, as I ran out with Ade to get assembled on the camp ground.
Few minutes later.
"Everyone, history has been made, the warp engine has been completed" said the captain.
We were selected to move to the Lagos space research center, deep in Agbowa, Ikorodu. Our job was to guard the team safely to Abuja, where it would be demonstrated to the whole world.
The job was relatively easy. We got to Ikorodu, moved the team and the device to the Air base, and flew to Abuja, all under fifteen hours. The following day was for the presentation. That night was full with merry drunk scientist and politicians. For me, I just wanted everything to be over so that I could find a bed to relax, any bed at all. It was incomplete, sleeping without a bed.
"That is a crime against humanity, come on!"
The following day.......
"This is huge, Africa is proud, Nigeria is proud. We are about to witness something spectacular," said a news anchor right beside me.
The whole ground at Abuja was packed, people were excited. We watched and made sure no one came close to the scientist nor the device. A few running legs later, everything was set and ready. The device started up. The demonstration, was to warp two volunteers to our little Moon colony, and then warp them again to Mars. Suddenly, something went......Wrong?
Nope, it was all smooth sailing. The missions were done seamlessly. All easy, until some relatively jealous and impatient American scientist interrupted the broadcast to showcase his own warp engine. He alleged building it on his own.
Laughable. As expected, he didnt fully understand the dynamics of dark energy, and the device malfunctioned. That was a dark moment for the whole world.
"Oh my god! If we dont do something about the dark energy build up, it could create a blackhole, or better yet, just blast half of the country to dust" ,shouted one of the scientists
"Better yet? Those scenarios are just demonic," I thought to myself
The American government was doing the best they could, clearing people out, sending in troops, and getting their best minds together, including ours.
From a joyful day to despair, because of greed, or maybe jealousy, or just both.
The time limit to the unknown disaster was estimated to occur within 72 hours. We were drafted the following day, to take a device; which would cool down the engine permanently.
This was Africa's, Nigeria's win, only.
We arrived our drop off point the next day, and assembled together with our allied troops. The task was simple; guide my team close to the device, and from there, we would handle the rest.
