“Wake up sleepy head”, a soft voice said right beside me.
I woke up, looked around, and no one was there. I took my time, dressed up and readied myself for the day. I was going to take one final look at the camp’s shield before proceeding with expansion for the colony.
All checks came up positive, and I gathered a new team to move out and set up the colony’s shield. This time, we were going to move together. I gathered fifty soldiers. We suited up and headed out.
We were going to set up the first device at the south end, then west, north, and finally east. A clockwise routine.
“Captain, is there really nothing else in this planet except huge plants” a trooper asked.
“If you dont stay sharp man, you will know soon enough” I replied
“Captain, we have arrived” another said
The edge of the supposed colony’s south section was like a rain forest. Very mystifying. The trees were tall and extremely broad. On touching them, they werent woody, but soft, very soft. The top of the trees was also broad, having a green mushroom like shape, with strange fruits sticking out from under it. Sincerely, to me, they were mutant giant-mushrooms. Every other plant closer to the ground had all manner of weird shapes, from grass like, to square shaped things sticking out of the ground like mosses. The place was chromatic, with a colour blend of red to green.
“Okay guys, let set up the first shield device”
We began, when suddenly, we heard……… a boom.
Shivers ran down my spine that moment, but there was no time to hesitate.
“Weapons Ready!” I shouted
I gave instructions as the booms got closer.
“Okay people, two teams. The DM tag team and the normal bullets team”
“Normies, we fire once they appear or interact with anything, we would distract and cover the DMT team……… DM team, load up as quickly as possible and take shots. Dont trigger the explosives until they phase out. I repeat, dont trigger the second line explosives until they phase out.”
“Yes sir” they replied.
We divided ourselves, DMT on the right, us normies on the left.
The sounds got closer, and I held my weapon tighter.
Finally, they were close, pushing down the mushroom tress as they approached. And like before, we couldnt see them, they werent phased out but invisible.
“Normies!! Open fire.” I shouted.
We began shooting, but there was no response, the creatures still approached, albeit, slowly.
“DMT, open fire now!”
The DM team shot the tags, which stuck on the targets. The tags to the naked eye, looked like they were floating. Still, our invisible assailants approached, then…. The sounds stopped, as if they had disappeared.
“DMs now” I shouted frantically.
They pulled the trigger the second time, and out of nowhere, right Infront of us, four giant sized beasts, came crashing down. We ran around like ants to avoid them, and barely escaped with our lives.
The beasts had blue scales with a lizard like head. The scales were hard, maybe thats why normal bullets and plasmas bounced off. Their bodies were bear like, as big as five elephants stacked together. They had brown long hairy tails with three talons at the end of the tail. Their backs were the total opposite of the front, very hairy.
“Captain, any name for this creature?” A trooper asked
“Amazing” I replied
“What captain?” He asked again
“What is that sticking out of their backs like human sized moles?” I asked
“Captain….. what!”
And “what” indeed. Slowly emerging from the backs of each creature were humanoid looking beings. They had human faces with feathers trailing off of two of them like a beard on a man, while the others had nothing on theirs. Their eyes were blue with scaly lips. On their head, was a clumped-up lump of hair that extended all the way to their rather human feet. At the tip of each lump, was some kind of sucker. Their arms were covered with tiny feathers. As we got closer, we could easily see that they were at least eight foot tall. They were clothed in a make shift attire maid of scales, and a lump of hair around their waist.
“Take aim” I said as we slowly approached.
The scared creatures brought out make shift spears and knives to defend themselves. I guess, stab is stab, and a knife is a knife no matter where you are.
“DMs, take aim, and fire on my signal” I said.
One of the creatures suddenly ran towards me, a last-ditch survival effort. I blocked its knife with my hand, and fired my gun. It fell. The others were scared, and moved back slowly.
“Sir, I dont think these creatures can phase” another trooper said.
“Okay, Normies, load tranquilizers, and fire.” I replied.
As we took aim, they trembled and ran. We chased in the air and fired. Within a few minutes, we had captured them, and radioed the extraction team for pick up.
At least it wasn’t all bad for a second run in, I was rather reassured, for now.
