The wailing woman

I heard the most astounding screams
The night before the last
The moon was shining bright and full
In twelve it struck half past

The scream I heard like last you hear
The one before the end
But just when I had thought it gone
I heard the scream again

Astounded likely most was I
To hear such violent cries
That when I heard the scream again
I tightly shut my eyes

"Be gone!" I shouted desperately
"Scream not again, strange voice"
Yet after many moments passed
It screamed and I made a choice

"I will avenge my bleeding ears!"
I sombre spoke alone
Then, as if this voice had heard
It screamed in mock of tone

"How rude of you!" I gasped aloud
For what a foul thing
The scream had mocked my words of promise
So I prompted screamer sing

Nothing did respond to me
I lay awake in bed
No sooner had I thought to check
I noticed I was dead
