Backstory: Maya and her family lived in California for a long time until the moved to Queens, New York for Maya's dad's job. She started attending Midtown High and quickly befriended Peter, Ned, and Betty. One day, she and her classmates were taking a field trip to a local museum to study the Super Soldier Serum and Steve's life for a report. The museum had a vial of the Serum on display that the class viewed. One girl who wasn't fond of Maya decided to shove her into the glass case containing the Serum. Maya fell forward and broke the case. The Serum vial broke as well, the shards cutting into Maya's skin, allowing the Serum to enter her bloodstream. She was rushed to the ER, but by then, the Serum was a part of her DNA. Peter, who in this dimension did decide to become a full Avenger, reported it to Tony later on, who visited Maya in her ER room and asked if she wanted to join the team.
