Chapter 9. The best friend...

Zhan and Yibo have been a couple for more than five months now and there has not been a day that Yibo has been unhappy with or because of him or has regretted anything. In fact, Zhan was there for him when his grandma died three months ago.

Fortunately, he had listened to Zhan and had gone to the nursing home with Zhan to visit his grandma. He thanked her for all the years that she took care of him and was always there for him. That she had always tried to make everything possible for him, even if it had looked very bad financially. And he wished her that all her deeds from her past would be forgiven.

There was only one thing that had hurt him very much in the past months. And that was not the death of his grandmother, nor anything that Zhan had done.

It was his best friend, and the only friend he had, who had hurt him so badly. At the beginning Seungyoun had said that he wouldn't mind that Yibo loves a man and even congratulated him, but little by little he showed his true mind.

Yibo had just been together with Zhan for a month when Zhan agreed to meet Seungyoun. It was a funny evening where the three men got along well and even agreed to meet again soon.

But already the next day the stress started. Seungyoun kept calling or writing messages and asking things like "Are you sure you love him?" - "Is he forcing you to play his boyfriend after all?" - "Do you, by any chance, expect to get some of his wealth after all?" - "Do you have to do that to keep your job?" And more.

Again and again he wrote the same questions to Yibo, again and again he called him and asked him these questions. And every single time he answered the questions in the same way "I love him with all my heart, it's not the job, it's not the money and I don't expect anything from him."

"I don't think you're really happy with a six-year-older guy you barely know who pays you for your services." Seungyoun had written this, leaving Yibo speechless.

How could he, his best friend he has known for so many years, think such a thing of him? Why didn't his best friend believe him? Why did he have to bombard him again and again with these questions?

It weighed heavily on Yibo. Even though he confided in Seungyoun who Xiao Zhan really is. Zhan had allowed him to tell. And Yibo also knew that Seungyoun had been a fan of authors for a long time and even wished for the author to reveal himself.

And now that he knew that, he didn't leave a good hair on him. And this completely without any reason. Because he could see how happy Yibo is with Xiao Zhan. How much he changed and finally blossomed.

But all this didn't change Seungyoun's mind and nothing Yibo told him he believed. He continued to believe only, and exclusively only his own truth. And according to him, Yibo is either an asshole who is after the author's money or he's being forced by the writer so he can keep his job.

After all, it was one of Zhan's friends who gave Yibo a different perspective. "Maybe he's jealous because his best friend has someone now and spends more time with him. Maybe he's just worried. Or maybe he hoped for more, either from you or our hot author." Said Peng Chuyue, Zhan's best friend.

Of course, this did not answer the question of why. But at least it steered the whole theatre in a different direction.

And then about five weeks ago, Yibo had met with Seungyoun and just confronted him. Then Seungyoun had told him that he was just afraid that Xiao Zhan would replace him as his best friend and Yibo would turn away from him.

Whether that's really all there is to it, or if there might be more to it, Yibo can't tell. It seemed strange to him that Seungyoun behaved like that. And if it was just about the friendship, he could have told him right away. Because then Yibo would have told him that he wouldn't have to worry about it, he would always remain his best friend.

Now all this stood like a huge wall between the two longtime friends. Yibo tried to forget this and met Seungyoun more often again, just to prove to him how seriously he takes their friendship.

But sadly, Zhan doesn't accompany him anymore. Zhan told him that he doesn't want to upset Seungyoun and wants to stand between them. Seungyoun should see that Zhan doesn't want to take his best friend away from him.

In this process Zhan, as well as Seungyoun, missed that this is exactly what hurt Yibo the most. Because he wishes so much that his boyfriend and his best friend get along with each other. That they could meet more often and have a nice time together.

But now, now there was Zhan on one side and Seungyoun on the other. Yibo wanted to spend as much time as possible with Zhan, but at the same time he wanted to meet his best friend on a regular basis.

Five happy months with Zhan and now the problem with Seungyoun hung like a thick impenetrable dark cloud between them. More and more Zhan buries himself in his work, while Seungyoun now shows up at least twice a week to spend time with Yibo.

The last weekend Seungyoun had even spent completely with Yibo. Which made Yibo not see Zhan for three days. From Friday afternoon until Monday morning Yibo couldn't see Zhan and it made him sad. He asked Zhan to come at least for one evening, but Zhan only repeated what he said each time, "I don't want to come between you two."

Torn between his feelings for Zhan and his friendship with Seungyoun, his only and best friend, Yibo felt really bad. Why couldn't the two just get along with each other?

Didn't they realize how much they hurt him with this? That he was unhappy because of these two?

For five months, Yibo had felt happy, felt joy, laughed and smiled a lot. But now it was fading more and more.

And after the last weekend when Seungyoun stayed at Yibo's place, Zhan had started working at night again. Yibo slept alone in his apartment and only saw Zhan when he was eating.

Even though Yibo tried not to let it show and told himself it was only because Zhan wanted to finish his book, he broke down more and more inside. Because he couldn't take it anymore. He wanted to have his Zhan again, to spend the nights with him again, but at the same time he didn't want to miss his best friend.

And Louis, of all people, noticed how badly Yibo really is feeling. He told Yibo not to worry about Zhan, he was just stressed about the deadline and the publisher's pressure. And that it had nothing to do with Yibo.

But Yibo also knew that Louis only said this because he was worried about the youngest employee in the house of Xiao. Louis had become a close confidant for Yibo over the past few months and so Yibo knew he would say anything to take away Yibo's worries.
