Chapter 19. POV Zhan / Memories

Zhan is sitting in front of his computer and had actually intended to write his new novel. But after he downloaded the pictures of their trip to his computer, he preferred to look at them, rather than write.

Writing has been difficult for him in the last few days. He had ideas for his new novel, but nothing really wanted to be grasped. He wondered if he was approaching a writer's block for the first time since he started writing.

Because as soon as he looked at the blank white page on his monitor, all the ideas he had previously had disappeared. It was simply all gone, and no matter how hard he tried, he could not manage more than a few words.

This also reminded him of his father. His father had also been a thriller writer long before he was born and before he met Zhan's mother. He was really good at it and his books were popular.

But then, just before the end of his last book, he suddenly suffered from writer's block. He had never finished his last book and had never written another book after that.

His father had given up writing and worked from then on in an office as a simple employee, but with a good salary. He met Zhan's mother, married her and a few years later Zhan was born.

The life of the family seemed to be fine and they lacked for nothing. They had a nice house in the suburbs. Zhan's mother could stay at home and be a housewife and mother and his father went to work in the office.

But shortly after Zhan's eighth birthday his father started to change. Back then he had bought a computer and often sat in front of it for hours without doing anything. He just sat there staring at a blank page in a writing program.

About three months after he bought the computer. Zhan woke up in the middle of the night when he heard loud screams and how something was destroyed. He snuck out of his room and saw his mother kneeling on the floor outside Zhan's father's office. She cried bitterly.

Zhan ran to his mother and saw that his father destroyed his office, the new computer was lying on the floor, parts of it were scattered around the room. Some of the keys of the keyboard were lying on the floor in a mess.

The desk that his father loved so much because it was his grandfather's, was lying there upside down, with a broken desk panel. Next to it was the office chair, which was missing a leg.

Angry and without paying attention to his wife and son, he rushed past the two frightened and crying people, down the stairs into the basement. There was no sound from down there, which frightened Zhan and his mother even more.

In the morning, after Zhan and his mother got into bed together and got some more sleep. The two of them ran downstairs to see if Zhan's father was still in the basement, but he was gone, leaving the two of them only a letter.

"My beloved wife, my beloved son,

please forgive me for scaring you. I don't know what got into me. I know I haven't been a very good husband and father to you, but I promise, when I come back, I'll make everything all right.

I have to go away for a while and try to be the same old man again. Please don't give up on me and wait for me. I love you both so much and I'm so sorry.

My renewed attempt to write a book nearly drove me crazy. I can't write anymore, no matter how hard I try. All my life I always wanted to be a author, but I have lost that ability and I suffer from it.

But I want to let someone help me. Because I don't want to lose you both. Please don't stop believing in me and pray for me. I will come back to you.

Love Xiao Lan."

He wrote that as a goodbye. Zhan and his mother had hoped they would see him again soon.

But after a week, two police officers accompanied by his mother arrived at the school. They picked up Zhan from his class and explained to him that his father had apparently died in their cabin in the mountains when he tried to make a fire while he was drunk.

His body, burned beyond recognition, was difficult to identify. And as long as it was not completely established that it was in fact his father, neither Zhan nor his mother wanted to believe that he was the dead man.

After it was confirmed that the dead man was really Zhan's father, a world broke down for them. Life went downhill for both of them and it went very far.

The insurance companies refused to pay. One said Zhan's father had acted with intent. The other, a life insurance company said Zhan's father committed suicide.

With no regular income, suddenly there was a lack of money around every corner. Zhan's mother couldn't find work because nobody wanted to hire her. And so, little by little, they had to sell all their belongings, including the house.

All they had left when they moved from their beautiful house in the suburbs to a tiny apartment in the big city was a box that belonged to Zhan's father. The wooden box had a lock on it and because they couldn't find a key, they hadn't tried to open it before.

It wasn't until a few weeks after they moved that Zhan and his mother sat in front of the box, where Zhan's mother hammered the lock with a hammer until it popped open and finally released the hidden contents.

The large wooden box was filled to the brim with bundles of money, stocks and securities. On the inside of the lid of the box was written "For the future of my family".

With all the money and the sale of the stocks and securities they could live worry-free from then on, but that did not bring back either their father or husband.

Zhan's mother bought two houses back then. One in another suburb and the house where he now lives with Yibo. The house where he wants to grow old with Yibo. Smiling, Zhan looked at one of the pictures of himself and Yibo when an idea came to him and he opened the Empty Page again.

He started typing and only paused when Yibo came to him and sat on his lap. "What are you writing?" He asked Zhan.

Zhan smiled and said, "I am writing how I met the love of my life and fell head over heels in love with this person. And that I'm about to marry my beautiful and loving fiancé."

Yibo curiously read the first pages and learned for the first time about that night in the hospital. When he held Zhan's hand and told him they must meet again. He had only very faint and vague memories of that night. But now that he read what happened, he remembered again.

He saw Zhan sitting next to him and his heart began to race. From the first moment, he knew that this man was special and that he wanted to be with him no matter what.
