Olivia POV

When the boys were all in the room, they didn't seem to really acknowledge my presence, just went to patting Niall on the back for...whatever it was he had done that was so spectacular. I had a suspicion it had something to do with me, but I didn't want to ask and draw attention to myself unless I had to. I had grown to suspect that maybe Niall wasn't as nice as he seemed and that talking to me had been some sort of dare, but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to completely believe it.

"Niall, mate, we guessed we'd find you in the music room, but we never expected to see you talking to a girl." The boy, who sported a head of fairly long, curly hair, pounded Niall on the back, drowning out the others words of 'congratulations' with his yelling. Niall, though grinning like an idiot at his friends assumptions, did glance at me when his sight wasn't blocked by the boys, giving me a look almost like a plea for help.

I couldn't help it. No matter how uncomfortable I was with not just one person being friendly near me, but 5, I had to laugh at the look on Niall's face. An uncharacteristic silence fell over the room, everybody now facing me, my laughter dying almost instantly under their heavy stares. I nervously raised my hand in a small wave towards the group in front of me, but they all looked at me still, almost as though they thought I would attack them at any moment. All except Niall, who just smiled at me warmly, signalling to the boys, for some reason, that I was cool.

"Hi." That was all I could think of saying, all I could manage to say with their eyes still trained on me. I looked to Niall, who, even though we had known each other all of 10 minutes, seemed to understand that I was uncomfortable and came to stand next to me, cautiously draping his arm over my shoulders in a friendly gesture. In a weird way, I felt more safe being held under his arm, despite the fact that if it were any other person, especially a boy, I would have flinched and maybe even whimpered or screamed.

"Ok, don't panic guys. First off, she doesn't know who One Direction is at all, so she is not a fan." They all seemed to visibly relax at Niall's first statement to introduce me, though normally people would have said my name to begin with. However, in this case, I was glad he said that first, as they all instantly stopped looking worried and smiled at me like a friend I had know since I was little, not met in the last 5 minutes. "Now, a proper introduction. This is-"

I cut him off before he could say my 'name'. It was one thing to lie about who you are to one person, but to 5 people? I wasn't sure that was a smart move. "Olivia. Olivia Moore. It's nice to meet you all." They all looked at me funny, probably wondering why I interrupted Niall when he was going to say the same thing anyway. Niall went to say something, but I interrupted, again. "I gave Niall a fake name, Georgia-Rose, before you arrived. I hadn't seen him around school before and after saying he 'ducked into the classroom', I didn't know if he had maybe broken in."

They looked at me and seemed to understand, though they all looked slightly sceptical as to how I didn't know who they were already, but I chose to ignore that part. One of the 4 boys in front of me snapped back to reality, the others following soon after. The first boy, with a slight quiff in his brunette hair, introduced himself as Liam, reaching out to shake my hand, which I did do, though with a bit of difficulty, being shy as I am.

Liam went on to introduce the other 3, who were all still a bit dazed, and dare I say confused, about me and my reaction to them. There was Louis, who had a head of windswept auburn hair, Harry, the 'loud, curly lad', and Zayn, 'the one with the overdone hair'. His definitions, not mine. And I couldn't help but laugh at how he introduced Harry and Zayn, causing them to look at me as though I was insane. Liam was the first to ask, "What's so funny?"

"Oh, nothing really, just that the 'loud, curly lad' is exactly what I had been referring to Harry as up until now." They all laughed with me for a moment, though Harry took slightly longer to join after putting on his fake pout. I continued once we had all calmed down a bit. "Anyway, what are you all doing here? You all have to be at least 18, maybe older, so you shouldn't even be in a school." They briefly looked shocked again, but then seemed to remember that we had just met, and I knew nothing about them.

"We are here because the principal wants us to perform for the students here as a part of the whole 'Dreams can come true if you put your mind to it' motto of the school." Louis gave off the impression that he thought it was a stupid idea, but also that he was excited to perform. "You see, I used to go to this school, until I went on X Factor around 3 years ago and got grouped with these idiots."

I looked at them, still slightly confused, but gave a smile so they knew I now understood why they were here. I couldn't help but ask the question that I was itching to ask, because even though I had literally met these boys in the last half hour, they were the kindest people I had spoken too, despite maybe Michelle, in a decade. "Wait, so if you were on the X Factor, how did it go?" And this time, they looked genuinely shocked, as though I had grown another head.

Harry gave me a quick summary, explaining that they hadn't won, but had still gotten signed to Syco, and were now a popular band called One Direction. He also explained why they were always so shocked when I asked them things that most other people knew, and why they were slightly worried when they saw me for the first time, unsure if I was a fan or not. At that point, I had literally had to cover my mouth to stop the laughter, because even though I completely believed them, for reasons unknown to me, I would never have gone crazy over these boys. They interrupted my conversation when I first met them, and that was not a great first impression.

When he was done, I understood mostly everything. These 5 boys make up the band One Direction, and because Louis went to this school a few years ago and they were all passing through for a bit, they were performing before and during break for the entire school. Easy enough, though why I believed every word they said was still a mystery to me.

Niall had another question for me. By now we only had about 10 minutes before class started and the boys had to go, but none of us really paid attention to that. He asked, "Hey Liv, can we get your number? I don't know about the boys, but I would love to hang out with you again after this." The boys all nodded in agreement, already reaching for their phones to get my number, though Niall, who still had his arm around me, I had only just noticed, made no move to get his. It was almost as though he was comfy holding me.

"I really would guys, but I don't have a phone." They all seemed to want to ask, but thankfully didn't, otherwise I would have to come up with another lie. These were the only people who I had been able to talk to in such a long time, and yet I didn't want them to find out about what happened at home and the way I was treated just yet. Maybe one day, but not just yet, not when I had only just glimpsed happiness. True happiness. I didn't want that to go away just yet.

I looked up at the clock, finally registering the time. 5 minutes before classes start. "Ok, boys, you all need to go now. There's only 5 minutes and, if you are really as popular as you make out to be, you are going to be attacked by screaming teenage girls if you don't go before they all reach this corridor." They nodded, and made there way to the door, saying goodbye as they went. They also insisted that they would find a way to contact me to hang out later, but I rolled my eyes and shooed them away.

I took my seat behind my desk, my bags at my feet, and tried to subdue my smile. If anybody saw me smiling this widely this early, they'd think I'd gone mad. The loser and the freak smiling alone on the first day of school would definitely raise some questions about my mentality, but I couldn't help it. I got my smile to be a bit more discreet and spent all of form thinking over what a great start to the year it had been.

Maybe this would be the way it was for the rest of the year? Maybe the boys really would try to hang out with me again? And with that though, the rest of my form came filing in, oblivious to my happy mood, the opposite of my attitude the previous year. 'This year is going to be great.' I thought to myself. And I believed it.
