The Inmates Mate
Chapter Fifteen
Ebony
Cameo's house is a very large house for someone who only made a first grade teachers salary yearly. Her parents left her the house after they retired to Florida where it's warm and sunny everyday.
When she first told me they had left it to her, since she was an only child. I was jealous. I wished I could afford to buy a property as beautifully large as her own.
We spent many long nights studying and having fun in the house together. It was in a suburb area about five minutes away from the hub of the city. Many families still lived in the suburbs letting their children bounce from house to house playing with the neighborhood children.
The house was one of the largest on the street, having a full three floors not including the attic. If I were to compare it to Raul's, I would say his is definitely bigger, but that's also because he has the acreage to support a larger home.
Her house had a porch with a hammock and two person swing hanging from the rafters. It was a white and pale blue schemed outside and reflected the same colors inside as well.
The inside was fully furnished in carpet and tile with all the old furniture that Cameo grew up with still standing inside. She has moved her things in the master bedroom, leaving two spare bedrooms upstairs and two more downstairs empty.
Cameo's parents always wanted a large family, quickly buying a large house inside of the city when pregnant with Cameo's brother. They ended up having three miscarriages before Cameo, their miracle baby, who was born happy and healthy. But when they tried many more times following Cameo, her mother finally gave up after an additional five more miscarriages. The hopefulness of having another baby to later not make it to term took a toll on her mother's mental and physical health making them stop completely.
It was a very sad story when Cameo explained it all to me when we first really committed to being friends. She expressed to me her own want to have siblings while growing up but never having them in the end.
The house was beautiful but also had a depressing feel in the air since all of the bedrooms were still empty. Cameo, when I began to move out of my mother and grandmother's cottage was quick to offer me a room for free of stay. While the offer was tempting there was a small feeling inside of me that wanted my complete independence and a place I could call home.
I didn't want to move into a home that will forever be referred to as Cameo's and her's only. I also wanted my own place by myself for a while before I committed to living with a roommate. Luckily the pay I get as an RN helps me pay for my rent plus more with ease.
As I stepped up the stairs with my overnight bag on one shoulder and a bottle of margarita mix in the other, Cameo opened the door with a loud squeal. It echoed down the street as she jumped forward, her hands clapping wildly while thrusting me into her chest for a hug.
Cameo was a smaller girl, her waist only as big as one of my thighs. She had light red hair and porcelain colored skin with light brown freckles scattering the surface. She wasn't very tall, being at least five inches smaller than me. Her frame has always been appealing to men, since her ginger hair and petite figure caused a 'wild redhead' fantasy to form.
Even in college she always had men approach her, hitting on her in the middle of a grocery store or when we were out at bars. Many times I found myself jealous of her since I wished I resembled her and that her life was so much easier since she was just so beautiful. Her personality always helped because she was so full of energy and nice to anyone that spoke with her. My envy for her never put a strain on our friendship but it always increased my self doubt unfortunately.
