The Inmates Mate
Chapter Seventeen
Raul
We ate breakfast at Ma's Diner on the square, one of my favorite places to eat. Ebony enjoyed it thoroughly and so did Ma, who owned the diner and was able to meet my mate. Ma was a human mate of a wolf that used to be an elder within my pack.
He has since died but only because of old age, nothing tragic thankfully. Ma was an older woman herself, reaching the ages to question whether she can keep the business going. She luckily had three kids and her oldest has always wanted to continue the business on long after Ma was gone herself.
I enjoyed having the family within my territory, they were good people and great business owners. They were just one of the many reasons I took over as alpha because they were not getting the respect and protection they deserved from the other alpha. He cared very little for their safety which is why I cared so much and quickly tripled the rounds and security done everyday to keep my pack safe. Since my reign I can proudly say there was not a rogue that dared to cross my borders of fear of being killed.
Ebony asked me more questions about myself which I was happily able to answer truthfully. She didn't waste time to ask the hard questions either since she asked them before we even sat down.
"So what do you do as a councilman?" she asked me as we were handed our menus.
I chuckled since she didn't mind jumping right in, "Well I am one of six in the state of Michigan but there are hundreds around the United States that protect their own territories."
"So you are given a territory and you protect and provide for those people in the area?" she concluded as I nodded confirming her question. "So is there a person above all of you that acts like a president?"
I nodded again as I placed my cup of coffee back onto the diner table, "Yes so we have our own version of a president, she is the head chairman of us all. We go to her if there are any large problems for her to council us on or fix herself," I explained as I watched Ebony's mouth turn into a large smile.
"The head chairmen is a woman? That's amazing," she said while leaning forward in her seat more interested. "What is she like? I bet she is a badass."
I laughed at her comment as I reached for her hand across the table. I needed to touch her at the moment as guilt filled me, unfortunately the head chairwoman and I had a history.
"Um she really is. She is one of the five other head councilwomen in our history. But she has held the power for much longer. She has a lot more people that support and fear her which is why she has held her position for so long and no one has dared to challenge her for it," I intertwined our fingers together as I reached for my coffee to drink again.
"What do you mean to challenge her for it?" she furrowed her eyebrows at me confused at my wording.
"So when another person wants your position as an alpha or head councilman you have to formally challenge them. I did it with the last asshole that had the territory. But you can only formally challenge them if you have the means to effectively take over their role. So we don't have a bunch of bad werewolves or young pups challenging for an alpha position all of the time," I explained as Ebony nodded her head to show she understood what I was saying so far. "Once you formally challenge them, you fight against each other until someone loses and dies. There are witnesses for the challenge to make sure the fight is fair and to properly document what the challenge's outcome was."
Ebony shivered at my explanation and I could feel through our mate bond mixed feelings about it. I could feel hints of disgust but also a dark interest in the act. She must not completely understand my culture in which I grew up with but this act, challenges, dates back to the earliest of times when our goddess Selene roamed the earth.
