.......
Do you hear that?...
No? Of course you don't. After all it is just silence.
She could hear nothing as she grabbed her brother's hand and sprinted out of the room ,just as it started to collapse, revealing the night sky, that was then engulfed in flames.Like despair devouring hope, she thought. She could see nothing as she breathed in the virulent smoke, while the stairs came crumbling down.Scared for her and her brothers life, she sat in a corner and pulled him close, forcing her eyes shut. She felt a prickling feeling near her fingers but not one of the fire. This felt more familiar than a picnic on a summer evening...And then nothing, she couldn't feel the heat of fire anymore, the suffocation of the smoke..nothing. She opened her eyes and to her surprise she was outside of the house, sitting on soft grass, watching as her and her brother's childhood home turned to ash.
She twisted and turned in her bed, replaying the scene over and over in her head. Overthinking every possibility and outcome, but it was still no use. She told herself over and over that there had to be an explanation to that night. 'After all you can't just be able teleport anywhere, right?'. She sighed 'no use thinking about it now' she thought. It had already been 4 days since their parents died, since their world came to a crumbling stop. She could still hear the sirens as they were rushed to the hospital and for the next 2 days all they were ever called were miracle children. Nobody even bothered to learn their names or call them anything else. They both heard whispers of jealousy of their fame on the newspaper and how they made it onto the news....but if this is what it takes.....If this is what is what it takes to be famous. She growled 'I'd much rather have my parents back, thank you very much.'
Tiny footsteps echoed through the room "Haily?"my brother asked "are you still up?"Suddenly very much awake, she stared into the darkness, hoping to find even a hint to where he was.....she gave up after a minute or two .She just couldn't. Though knowing that he couldn't see her either, she smiled, stood up and held out her hands to find him. Eventually,he found his way into her arms, but not before A LOT of stumbling. Haley laughed, "So what's up little guy? why are you awake at this hour?"she asked playfully.
Parker fumed "Hailllsss" he whined "what did I tell you about calling me that! You do know that I'm only a year younger right??"
She laughed, "Of course I do buddy! but what else am I supposed to call you?" she asked. He thought about it for a moment, falling silent. "Hmmm......." he thought. Then paused, as if he had just thought of a perfect thing "...How about you call me my name?" he tried. Shocked by his response, Haily stumbled with her next sentence. Thinking she was choking ,Parkers' eyes widened and he ran over to his big sister, asking if she was ok. Confused, she said she was fine and asked what was wrong.Even more bewildered than his sister, Parker looked her straight in the eye and said "wait...you're not choking?"Both of them said nothing, waiting for the other to explain. They glanced at each other out the corners of their eyes and gave in simultaneously, cracking up at their own stupidity.
After they had stopped laughing, Haily looked at her brother-or what she could make of him- and told him that his 'request' would be fulfilled. Parker grinned and said thanks. She pushed his head lightly and said "Go to sleep knucklehead, we've got a big day tomorrow, remember?"
Parker paused then turned around excitedly "Oh yeah! I forgot that tomorrow we're going to the Orphanage!....wait...DIDN'T WE AGREE TO CALL ME BY MY NAME?!?"he yelled.
"Oh yeah...whoops, guess I forgot.." she shrugged.
"Well don't forget again!"he fumed, stomping to the bed the 'nice' policeman had prepared for them and laid down.
Once Parker's snores had filled the room, she drifted off thinking 'right...we've got ourselves a big day tomorrow, don't we Parker?' before fading into the darkness of sleep.
