-Grace's POV-
After I get tested and registered with an ID and my bag of belongings, the officer takes me to a white van, which I get into. Let me just say, I've never felt such a strong pedophilic effect on my life, until I saw that thick-mustached officer, AND I got into a white van. These seem like warnings.
"Hey," I say, entering the bus. Jenna, Lily, and the blonde chick from the waiting room were already there. There was also a new person, a thin girl who I hadn't seen yet.
Nevertheless, I made it more squished. "Sorry," I sat next to the blonde. She smiles, replying, "Oh no, it's alright. I'm Piper." By the looks of this girl, and my common knowledge of prisons due to TV shows, she seems like the girl who's all happy, but never lasts till the end. "I'm Grace." I shake her hand, and after she frowns. "Huh, my zipper's broken." She pulls the zipper up and down, but nothing seems to work.
The driver finally turns around to speak.
"First time down?" She chuckles.
We all nod except for Piper.
"My first time here?"
"Your first time in prison."
"Oh," Piper's mouth makes an 'o' shape. "Yes."
The driver says sympathetically, "It's not so bad. Everyone's okay,
but you gotta watch out for the stealing." With that, the other skinny girl picks up her bag and holds it close to her chest.
"So," the driver continues, "what's your name? Last name.
Everyone uses last names here. I'm Morello. That's Watson," she says, nodding to the skinny girl.
Jenna says "Mourey."
Lilly says, "Singh."
I, of course, say, "Helbig," and Piper says "Chapman."
"How much time you got?" She asks us, and I speak up. "Jen-Mourey, Singh and I have three years, unless they figure out who the actual criminal is before the final trial, and Piper here has... thirteen, I think?"
I say it as a question, and Piper nods yes.
"That's not so bad, Chapman. I'm in for thirty four, but I'm hopin' with good time it'll be less. Already done eight. You three have a while to go, though."
The three of us nod, but Piper just stares at Morello, her mouth agape.
"You're..." she pauses, trying to figure out what she's trying to say. "They let you drive?"
Who else is gonna do it?" Morello questions Piper, chuckling at the thought of officers actually doing something. "We do everything around here."
She pauses again, looking around the van. We're an unlikely bunch to end up here, yet here we are.
"Can I ask you something?" Morello asks in her thick accent, rustling through her magazines. She must have at least twenty. "You guys look like you'd know, since... You look like models," she says, talking to Piper and I. I look like a model? Alright, I'll take it. "Which dress you like better...?" She folds down a page, and passes the glossy magazine to us.
"My top two faves are the ones with the Half & Half lids stuck to the pages." She points to them.
Now Piper looks like she hates both of them, and I admit they're a bit too tacky for my taste, but the right one looks a little more elegant. The others in the van squish around the magazine.
"I want something that's gonna
express my personality, you know? And the trick is, I wanna show off the boobs and the ass, but I'm not so happy with the upper arms and the stomach, so there's the challenge."
I almost laugh when she says that, but then I remember where I am. I am in prison. All of these people could hurt me.
Piper by now is Snow-White-level pale.
"...They're both..." She looks for a positive adjective. "...nice."
"That's all you gotta say?"
"Well," I start, "I think the right one looks very elegant, with all the patterns, and I think it'd look great on you." I smile, and her red lips form a smile. She's very beautiful... but she wears too much makeup.
Janae nods, but also flips the page and asks, "What about this one?"
"I thought about this one too, but Christopher didn't like it." She frowns sadly, looking towards me for a second, then snaps her head back to the front of the car, smiling.
You can sometimes tell when people are putting on a brave face and smiling for the people around them. I can already tell that Morello is one of those people.
We get out of the van, and I can already feel the anger shooting out from the eyes of the people passing by us.
I better get used to it.
After all, this is prison, and unless you do your time or run away, there's no way out.
