There was a thief who heard about the forbidden treasure which contained all the opulence greedy men could ever dream of. So, the thief went for a journey to find it. In his way, he met an old lady begging for a food, knowing well what poverty was like, he shared his bread with her and gave her fresh water to drink. To return the gratitude, the old woman gave the thief her words of wisdom that will guide him in his journey. "You must save a young lass from the dragon's cave and take good care of her for seven days. She will then lead you to the forbidden treasure you desire most." The old woman said.
The thief did what she said, and successfully saved the damsel in distress from the grasps of the vile dragon in its fiery lair. As the days passed of aiding her, the thief noticed the gradual change of the girl's physique into a lovely woman. The thief eventually fell in love with her kindess and beauty that he almost forgot what he came for. However, as the seventh day arrived, the maiden reminded him about the forbidden treasure, and just like that, the greedy persona of the thief returned. "What shall I do to have the forbidden treasure that I desire most? Tell me and I will no doubt do it."
"You must strike my heart with a dagger and the forbidden treasure that you desire most will be yours." The maiden declared.
Without thinking, the thief struck her with his dagger and as soon as the maiden fell dead on the ground, a shining light momentarily blinded him. Once he opened his eyes again, there lied before him mountains of glimmering gold and precious gems. He was overjoyed at the sight but the emptiness of his heart made his happiness to be temporary. "Why do I feel this way? No matter how many gold I have, these gems, these jewelries...all these wealth felt like nothing...it meant nothing without you..." He whispered faintly at the cold misty air of longingness. "You are my real treasure. And now that you're gone, these things I have are only the reflection of my selfishness."
He missed the damsel he saved, the damsel he took good care of, and the damsel he fell in love with. It was too late to realize that all his dreams and wealth meant nothing if he had no one to share it with. Now the thief would always regret for choosing greed over love.
His story tells us that we won't find real treasures from being materialistic. We find real treasures from loving someone. Because being selfish will make you lonely, but sharing love with someone else will make you feel like you have it all.
