“Hello? You there, Mom?”
“Jia! Oh my God, I thought you’d never call! Sandy said you were settled in but you didn’t call? Why didn’t you call? You don’t even have enough time to tell me how you were, what it’s like there! I’m your Mom for goodness’ sake, you ungrateful little kid!”
Jia sighed as she moved the receiver away from her ear.
“Sure, mom. I missed you too.”
The week passed by like a hazy cloud of activity and inactivity. Basically, the only things that kept Jia busy were the interviews set for her by the Madame, and the frequent tours of the Fort Electric Company where the woman was deemed Chairman. But, in her free time, which meant almost every time, she spent every second milling around her penthouse, which surprised her a lot when it was given to her.
Jia didn’t expect such extravagance.
“You told me you’d call as soon you arrived at your penthouse!” her mom, Anita Frias, screamed her way into the phone. “I was so worried about you!”
“You know I don’t really get along with phones, and they equally don’t get along with me so I prefer not to use them unless completely necessary.”
“And I’m not necessary? I’m your mother for Christ’s sake!”
“I can always ask Sandy how you’re doing,” Jia reasoned as she sat down on her red leather couch. “After all, you call him every day. I know you can’t reach my phone mom, but I didn’t have enough willpower to charge it until now. Don’t worry, it’s like we’re indirectly keeping track of what the other is doing, through Sandy.”
“And what made you change your mind and charge your phone for today?” asked her mother, annoyance clear in her voice.
“I was bored. So I picked up the charger and charged my phone. That simple.”
“Oh, what am I going to do with you, Julianna?” her mother sighed. She could just imagine her holding the phone close to her ear with both hands leaning on the bed as if she didn’t want anybody hearing them. She’d panicked like this before. It’s a usual thing for Anita Frias to worry about everything. Well, mostly her daughter.
“You could say that you missed me?” Jia suggested, a grin spreading on her face.
Her mother scoffed. “I don’t have to tell you that. You already know that I missed you, and I always will. By the way, how’s the city? Are you loving it so far?”
Jia paced around her room, her bare feet digging into the plush blue carpet blanketing the maple wooden floorboards. The queen-sized bed lay untouched and newly made at the center of the room illuminated by two chandelier shades placed at either side of the bed. Thick red curtains and draperies block her view of the city but thin blinds gave her a partial view of the receiving area outside her room. Jia slumped on a stool placed near the bedside table with her wallet, meds and other personal things sprawled over the top.
“The city is beautiful mom. Madame Adelaide has been… surprisingly and unexpectedly generous to me. I didn’t really think such people existed. She wasn’t what I thought her to be.”
“You can’t judge people easily. You can’t classify them into a category at once. Not all rich people are like the ones we knew. They’re not all like the landlord, or the mayor. This is only a part of the world your seeing, Jia. Broaden your sight.”
