“What do you think you’re doing?”
Jia turned and blocked the view of the tile of her body. She saw from the door a silhouette of a man, with hair styled up that it formed a fin-like tuft above his head, with long thin spider legs and a lanky frame. From the moment Jia laid eyes on his shadow, she felt an aura of danger surrounding his figure. The man, about the same age as Madame Adelaide, shamelessly entered the girl’s restroom and stared Jia down.
He had dark shadows under his eyes as if he’d suffered from a number of sleepless nights. His thick dark and angular brows added a sinister effect to his face. A jet black leather trench coat draped loosely around his shoulders. He reached Jia and towered over her. He was at least six feet tall, an embellished emerald green cane in hand.
“I am using the girl’s restroom, what about you, what do you think you’re doing, entering here?” Jia snapped. She didn’t know where she got her newfound confidence and courage, but everything about the man seemed like a threat she had no choice but retaliate. “There is a men’s restroom at the other end of the corridor, sir. I don’t suppose you’ve missed the gigantic sign.”
The man brushed off her comment. He sauntered around the restroom, running a gloved hand over the marble lavatory. The luminescent yellow lights cast an eerie glow on his high cheekbones. Despite his age, he looked strong enough to take an army of youngsters by himself.
“Hmm, you’ve got a lot of spirit to talk back, or a lot of stupidity. Anyway, my dear, you are meddling with forces that do not involve you—I’m talking about myself—so, move away from the entryway, Rogue.”
Jia stared at him queerly. “Why does everybody keep calling me Rogue?”
“Because you are one,” the man replied impatiently before pushing Jia away from the tile with her emerald cane. “And you’re too early for the season, which makes you really weird an unexpected.”
In a flash, the man shoved her out of the women’ s restroom and pushed the door with a sweep of his hand expelling energy. Jia realized, He’s one of them.
She walked away from the girl’s restroom. She was that close to discovering something about what she is but the man, the man with the cane took away her chance. She looked out of one of the open windows of the building. She laid a hand on the sculpted corners and noticed the darkening of the sky. Suddenly, she felt vibrations originating from underneath her. The detention system was opening. Then, it started to rain.
For a few minutes, Jia just started out the window, waiting for time to pass by.
“Why do I feel so calm about this?” Jia wondered aloud. “I should be freaking out!”
Her next class was at the same building and it was also located at the same floor. She had no intentions of returning to Mr Valerio’s class, anyway.
What exactly was she doing? Running after Aaliyah like that and ditching her class, it wasn’t the way she’d expect herself to act. Jia stared at her hand. She knew she could do something different, something far from normal. She looked around in search for something.
So far, the hallway was empty. High-arched ceilings and wide gold-hued panels created an illusion of a spacious area. Or maybe it really was a spacious area. Glass shelves were displayed at the walls of the hallway. It contained displays of full body sculptures of national heroes, bust heads of Greek Gods. Jia realized that it was the art hallway. Further down the hallway, framed canvasses of paintings by the Fort students were hung at even intervals. One artwork was a painting of a hand, paint splattered, holding a fireball.
