The bell rang and I swung my bag over my back and met Jacob at the door.
"You excited?"
"Ummm, of course!"
Varsity volleyball team tryouts were today after school and since I was a junior, I was eligible for a captain position.
"I'm really nervous though. I haven't played in a while." I confessed as Jacob walked me down to the locker room.
"You will be fine. Honestly, you're amazing! Broadway performer, Nina for the school's production of In the Heights, you're on a roll. Do I need to say more?"
"Ok I think I get it. You're too sweet!"
"I know. I'll be rooting for you!"
I arrived in the locker room and quickly changed into a my old volleyball shirt and some spandex. The girl beside me tapped me on the shoulder as I was fixing my hair into a pony.
"Hey, do you have an extra headband? I forgot mine. Please tell me you do!" she asked desperately.
"Oh yeah, I do. Here, I'm using my white one. You can have the black one."
"Oh thank you! You're a lifesaver! I'm Ashley."
"Oh, I'm Ella."
"Nice to meet you. I'm a senior. Are you a sophomore? I haven't seen you around."
"No, I'm a junior. I'm new though, that's probably why."
"Oh, then welcome to Hunter. What position do you play?"
"I'm usually a libero. What about you?"
"Oh, you look like you'd make a good one. I'm usually setter."
"Oh cool. We better head out before we are late."
"Agreed."
Ashley and I followed the girls out of the locker room. I couldn't help but think that Ashley would make a good captain. She had this vibe about her, like authoritative but caring at the same time.
I looked up at the bleachers. There were some families scattered throughout the gym to watch their daughters tryout. I found Jacob near the top, and Vanessa, and Seb?! What? I waved and they waved back.
"Alright, ladies. I know this is varsity, but still have fun. We are just going to run through some drills, ask you to do some serves, passes, spikes, etc. and play some short games, then call it a day." the coach said.
The drills went by quickly but they weren't as bad as I thought they'd be. And then we lined up to serve. That definitely was not my forte. We had to serve to Zone A, marked by a mat on the floor. Least to say, I didn't make it. It sailed over the net and came short. I sighed at myself. When was I going to spot being a libero and more of a right hitter. Ashley, however to my delight, served spot-on the mat. And Olivia did too.
Afterwards, it was time to play defense. I dug, passed, and set perfectly, never letting the ball touch the ground no matter how the assistant coach served it to me. The same could be said for Ashley. She wasn't a digger as much as I was, because of her speed on the court. Olivia struggled a bit compared to us.
"Alright ladies, thanks for showing up. I have your results right here." the coach said. Her name was Catherine Burgess or Coach Burgess and her assistant was Mr. Tate.
