"Hi James", King said, he approached the stand & leaned against it, trying to make James feel comfortable. "Your mom tells me you do well in school, is that true"?

James nodded.

"That good", King nodded & attempted to share a smile with James. But James was far too nervous, he didn't want to be up there.

"Can I just go please", James asked? He was visibly shaken.

"I get that you're scared, you don't want to choose between your parents, you don't want them to get mad at you", King said. "But you need to be up here buddy, I'm sorry".

James nodded in understatement.

"I don't want you to be up here any more than you do", King said. "But as your friend, I need you to be up".

"I just want to go", James said, his voice was shaky & he looked down at his lap.

"Sure, I just need you to answer some questions", King said. "Can you do that for me"?

James nodded.

"Has your mother ever hit you or hurt you James", King asked, jumping right to the point?

James shook his head.

"Has your father", King asked?

Again, James shook his head.

"Have you ever felt in danger around your father", King asked?

James hesitated, but again nodded his head.

"What happened", King asked?

"Dad & Mom were in an argument, they got really mad, but dad punched the wall", James admits.

Steve sighed heavily from his seat.

"Did that scare you", King asked? James nodded. James nodded. "The boy is scared of his own father, it doesn't seem to be best to leave him in Mr. Rogers' care".

"Was there anything else your father did that made you scared", King asked? This time James shook his head. "Alright then".

King walked back to his seat as Smith rose & approached James.

"James. Can you tell me which parent you like more", Smith asked.

"Objection", Sharon & King yelled!

Judge Roy, "James may answer".

James looked between his mother & father for a minute, before finally raising his shaking hand to Steve.

"Why is that", Smith asked? James didn't answer, he was too scared. "It's okay James, but I need you to answer".

"Because Mom is always angry with me & Emma, she tells at us all the time", James admitted. Sharon gave a disappointed look from her seat.

"Hm", Smith hummed. "Did you notice how all of the questions that Mr. King asked you were about your father, trying to make him seem like the bad guy"?

"Yeah", James said, his voice still shaken & quiet.

"What about your mother, does she ever hit you or make you feel afraid or upset", Smith asked? James gaze shot to his mother. Smith noticed & stepped in between the two. "James"?

James nods slightly.

"What does she do", Smith asked?

James was hesitant to answer, "She gets mad at dad or me & Emma. Dad tries to calm her down, but it's too much some times".
