Author's Note: Based off of a roleplay prompt.
"Oh you gotta be kiddin' me!" Bucky scolds, like the world can hear him and maybe that'll make the rain clouds retreat and stop the sudden pour of rain.
Remaining silent, Peggy merely raised a singular eyebrow in response to his sudden outburst. The sudden change of weather had been a little inconvenient but certainly nothing to whine about. Or perhaps it's because Peggy is used to adapting quickly to sudden change...
Bucky checked the weather more than once when he had finally brought his girl down to Coney Island, like he'd promised her so long ago - but the memory plays in his head like it was yesterday. The first time Peggy came to the states to visit Bucky, it was too cold and the rides were shut for the winter. Now the second time, and it's pouring!
They'd just had something light to eat at a small diner along the boardwalk, but Bucky had failed to notice the storm clouds that rolled in and claimed the day. Maybe if he lifted a middle finger to the sky it'd make him feel better. Instead, he's rendered to keep his composure while he stands beneath the awning of the establishment, shielded from the rain. It was the second day of her visit, so, fortunately, there was still time to make up for the weather.
It's one of those summer rains, thank god. The ones that don't let the cold seep into your bones and leaves everything humid after. It's nice while it's there, so there shouldn't be too much of a worry since they'll end up having to walk in it anyways. The veteran frowns and quickly tries to come up with something better to satisfy now that carnie games and rides are out of the question.
The arcade is nearby, but that doesn't sound too enjoyable under the circumstances of a date. That's something that the younger age would play with for a date. A grown man taking his girl to an arcade sounds appealing at first, but Bucky imagines it gets uncomfortable and awkward quickly.
His eyes linger to the ocean, where the waves meet the sand and how they crash just a bit harder and more violent from the shift in weather.
"The world is out to sabotage my love-life." Bucky declares, like the whole universe has a bone to pick with James Buchanan Barnes.
A roll of Peggy's eyes and her usual quip that seemed to be saved just for the man beside her, "Oh Barnes, quit you're fussing." She had become used to his childish complaints. Actually, she found it rather amusing – as odd as that may sound coming from Peggy, but she knew James. She knew how serious the man could be, knew how he struggled with his inner demons... She had come to realise his childishness was his moment of happiness, and after the many low's she's seen him, and helped him out of, she'd be damned if she were the one to pop that bubble of happiness, he was in.
"Shit. M'sorry, doll... We could probably figure out something else to do tonight to make up for this, maybe... Going out dancing-" He's thinking out loud, then the male comes to an abrupt halt in his speech.
Dancing.
They don't need to go to a hall to have fun.
Besides, Peggy is the adventurous type. His newfound idea should be right up her alley - shouldn't it?
That wicked grin forms on the brunet's face, the one that tells that he's come up with some most likely ridiculous idea.
Brown eyes met blue ones and pursed red lips parted upon seeing that mischievous grin form on his face. Oh no. No. No, no, no. That grin meant trouble.
"James Buchanan Barnes! What on earth are you doing?!" She called out to him as he left her side without a word and made his way out into the rain. A little rain never hurt anyone.
Momentarily ignoring the Agent calling out after him, he turns on his heel and offers his hand to Peggy with that cheeky grin of his. "You're a dancer, aren't ya? N' you've never been one to be afraid of gettin' a little messy." Bucky starts, and fills in the blanks before Peggy can. "How's a dance sound? Right now. In the pouring rain."
Bucky likes the cliche. He likes the cheesy. He likes it with Peggy, at least. And if she wants to decline his offer of something rather bizarre, he won't mind it one bit. But the thought of doing something so silly and even out of their character to make the best of a situation gone wrong, then Bucky isn't opposed to it by any means.
Cheesy grin on one face and parted red lips and a shocked expression accompanied the other face. However, the moment Barnes made it sound like a challenge, Peggy was automatically on board. She was never one to turn down a challenge. Slowly, that shocked expression she wore turned into a smirk as she stood there with one hand on the hip of her navy blue dress.
"Or should I ask a bit more formal...?" Bucky teases - grateful he decided to bring a light coat and urged the same of Peggy due to the clouds he'd taken note of before.
They were supposed to be just clouds, though...
Whatever. He can enjoy the rain now.
"Miss Peggy Carter - Will you dance out in the rain, looking like an absolute goof with me?"
The smirk Peggy wore slowly softened into a widened smile, one that stretched up to laughing eyes that held twinkling orbs as her laughter filtered over the soft murmur of other sheltered bystanders.
Running over to him – in heels, in the sand! Nonetheless! A factor Bucky clearly didn't take into consideration upon the most ridiculous idea he's had so far.
Slender fingers clutched onto his warmers ones which immediately wrapped around her palm, enclosing them safely beneath his touch.
"How on earth could I refuse such an offer?" she softly teased as her other hand came up and rested upon his shoulder as his own arm wrapped around her lower waist, assuring there was little room between their figures.
It's never a dull moment among these two. It never has been. Whether for better or worse, there is no such thing as calm when these two are together. They're a duo, a team, that tends to get goofy as hell when they truly want to be. Bucky tries his best to bring that par of Peggy out – make sure she allows herself time for fun. It's healthy, it helps the mental state, and in making Peggy smile, it makes Bucky smile in turn. Clothes begin to stick to their bodies beneath the rain but neither care. For the moment, he just wants to make memories they won't forget – rain, or no rain.
"Well! Won't 'cha look at that! Peggy Carter does know how to have fun!" Bucky teases as he takes the lead in swaying their bodies.
"There's a lot you don't know about me, Barnes." Taking initiative, Bucky lowers his arm around Peggy's slim waist, pulling their bodies flush together with that same cheeky grin. Brows raised from Peggy as her mind goes into overdrive and what other mischievousness Bucky had planned before a small squeal of surprise escaped past her lips as Bucky dipped her without warning. Supporting her from falling with her arm, he quickly pulls her back up, chuckling quietly to himself. Though her own laughter harmoniously mixed with his and it made his heart flutter even more upon hearing that sound. More so, because /he/ made her laugh. He always liked it when he made her laugh.
It's unfiltered joy. Not something they both get enough of.
"I see the weather hasn't deterred your dancing skills. Your talents knows no bounds, Mr. Barnes." Her tone lightly teasing, laughter in her voice as the rain continued to pour on them, dampening spirits of others on what was meant to be a joyous carnival day, but never managing to dampen the spirits of the two dancing in the summer rain.
