Chapter 1
"Kyra!"
Kyra jolted awake, startled. "What?"
She sat up sleepily. Rowan, who had called her name, was standing by her bed. "It's almost breakfast, '' she said. "You need to get ready."
Kyra checked the clock on her nightstand and gasped. Breakfast was at 9:00, and it was already 8:51! She jumped out of bed, slipped on her glasses, grabbed her clothes, and ran to the bathroom to change. Once she was done changing, she took her toothbrush and toothpaste from the cup they were in, and brushed her teeth. She walked back to her bed and glanced at the clock-8:57. 3 minutes to get to the dining hall.
The rest of the four prophecy children-Rowan, Phoenix, and Asher- were in their beds, either reading, or, in Phoenix's case, staring off into space with an evil grin on their face.
"We should really get going for breakfast," Kyra said. Phoenix checked their nightstand clock. "Good point,"they agreed. Kyra put on her watch as Asher and Rowan got out of bed.THen the four of them walked to the dining hall.
The dining hall was bustling with activity. Most of the rebels lived in asort of massive underground apartment, and all of them shared one dining hall. Kyra and her friends walked over to the table they usually sat at. It was Phoenix's day to get the food, so they got up and disappeared into the kitchen. They returned about a minute later with a tray full of pancakes, a pitcher of syrup, a bowl of blueberries, and a smaller rey with vegan, wheat-free pancakes. Rowan was allergic to wheat and eggs, and was lactose intolerant, so she ate different food than the rest of them. Phoenix took a pancake, placed it on their plate, and smothered it with syrup. They took a handful of blueberries from the bowl and put them on the side. Then, they stabbed the pancake with their fork, and stuffed it into their mouth. Asher, Rown, and Phoenix all stared at them. Phoenix shrugged. "I was hungry."
Rowan snorted. "You're always hungry, Phoenix."
Phoenix laughed. "True, true."
Kyra looked at Phoenix and Rowan with amusement. "That looks fun," she said. "I wanna try it."
Kyra took a pancake from the tray and repeated what Phoenix had done. She stuffed it into her mouth.
She chewed.
And then suddenly broke into a huge grin. "This is awesome!" she said. Then she did the same with another pancake. She stared at Phoenix, and said, "I can't believe I've been missing out on this for twelve yeares!"
"I know, right?" Phoenix said, smiling. "So good."
"So good!" Kyra agreed, her mouth filled with pancake. "Rowan, Asher, you two should definitely try it."
Rowan quickly said, "I'm fine", while Asher shook his head vigorously. "Okay," said Phoenix. "But you two are missing out."
The four of them spent the rest of the meal chatting, eating, and playing footsies underneath the table(Phoenix always won).
Once they were done eating, Kyra took a deck of playing cards out of the purple jacket she always wore. Phoenix had taken out the tray, so it was their day to choose. "Egyptian War!" said Phoenix enthusiastically. Everyone groaned. Phoenix always won at Egyptian War.
Phoenix shrugged, grinning. "It's not my fault I Have quick reflexes," they said.
So the four played Egyptin War. They had to end the game short, because breakfast ended in the middle of the game. But they counted how many cards everyone had. Phoenix won, as usual, with a total of 42 cards. Rowan came in second, with 5 cards, and Kyra, with three cards, took third. Aher had gotten out early in the game, and hadn't been able to get back in. The four got up from the table, and walked to their room. They had fifteen minutes of free time before lessons started.
