It was about a month after the whole disaster had occurred. "Scud!" Spensa half whispered half yelled into the darkness. She brought her thumb up to her mouth and sucked on it to slow the trickle of blood.
She'd just hit her finger on the corner of a wall on the darkness and now it was bleeding and- "Scud."
Spensa gently pulled her finger out of her mouth and gingerly wiped it on her uniform. Even after all those injuries, the little ones still hurt the most. Which was scudding annoying!
Spensa pressed her thumb into the side of her uniform and continued down the hallway.
When she finally turned the corner to get to the cafeteria, she ran into a black figure. Instinctively, she reached out to punch whoever it was, but stopped an inch from their face.
As her eyes adjusted, she realized it was Jorgen, who looked just as shocked as she was. He was holding his hands up in surrender. "Oh. It's just you."
She walked past him, but he grabbed her sleeve and pulled her back around. "I don't think so, Spin. Where are you going?"
"Why do I have to tell you?"
  "I'm your flight leader."
"... I skipped dinner and now I'm hungry, is that a crime?" Spensa grumbled.
"Technically, yes. But, I won't report you."
"Oooooh, showing favoritism Jerkface?" Spensa taunted.
"Be quiet and go get your food before I do report you."
There was a pause, before Spensa asked: "Wait, why are out here?" Even in the dim light she could see him run his fingers through his hair. His cheeks heated up too, making her raise her eyebrows.
"I was, um, actually coming to find you..."
"Jorgen, it's 3 in the scudding morning."
He sighed. "I know you've been having trouble sleeping since the battle."
Spensa backed up a step. "What do you mean?!?" She asked, a little too harshly.
"Do you see yourself? This past month you've been like a zombie! I haven't seen you this energized is weeks, Spin! You've constantly got dark circles under your eyes, and everyone's noticed!"
Spensa reached up to the space under her eyes as if she could feel the dark circles. "Say... say that you're right. That still doesn't explain why you were trying to find me."
"Let's go on a walk, okay?" His tone was hushed, and without waiting for a response, he started walking briskly the opposite direction of the cafeteria. Spensa caught up to him and they walked in silence until they reached the door.
Spensa has been taught not to show weakness, but this was Jorgen. She had to admit that he was probably the person she trusted most, besides maybe Cobb and Kimalyn. They walked out into the darkness, and suddenly the only illumination was the faint glow of the building behind them. "I like the dark." Spensa stated randomly.
"It is kinda nice, isn't it?" Jorgen stumbled over a rock and Spensa reached and caught him. They were in the awkward position, Jorgen with one hand on the ground and one hand around Spensa's waist. Spensa was practically sitting on the ground and she had both her arms wrapped around Jorgen. She felt her cheeks flush ever so slightly but doubted Jorgen noticed in the dim light.
"Spensa." His voice was low, lower than before.
She didn't want to move, afraid to break the trance. Jorgen shifted, and Spensa abruptly stood up, offering her hand to him. He took it and even when they started to walk he didn't let go. "I missed you, you know that?" He whispered into the darkness.
"... I missed you too." She admitted.
They stood there for a beat before Spensa added: "We should probably get back..."
"Oh, yeah, right." Jorgen said, and when they turned around Jorgen let go of her hand.
They walked back the rest of the way in comfortable silence before they got the the hallway where they would part. "Goodnight, Jorgen."
He leaned down and kissed her gently on the head. "Goodnight."
