“You can always know when they are planning something fishy.” Alex said still staring at them.
“June will be the one to lose. She will just be a spitting image of our mother even if she is not her daughter.” Ian replied.
“She is slowly developing the toxicity our mum has always had. Especially when she detests anyone.” Alex replied.
They didn’t bother splitting since it would be of no good, the wrath would be the same either way. Ian started narrating how June behaved when she realized Alex and June were not in the house, he explained how she approached Ian asking whether the two were together and they laughed hysterically. Alex was sure that would hurt June as hell. He was not ready to fall in love or marry his cousin at whatever costs, it didn’t matter whether she was a distant cousin or whatever as long as there were blood ties.
“You mean she couldn’t take in the fact that Brenda was not preparing breakfast with her mother?” Alex asked.
“Maybe. Who knows whether she thinks Brenda will follow her mother’s footsteps?” Brenda said and they all laughed. “She forgets I am here for four years only and I will be done with everything here.” She added.
“What do you mean you are here for four years Brenda?” Alex asked.
“I mean it. What will I be doing after form four?” She asked her hands akimbo.
“Will you not join campus here?” Ian asked.
“I am not sure of that but I already hate this place, although Alex is making me fall in love with it.” She said with a genuine smile.
They were approaching Vanessa and June who were just staring at the three walking leisurely and really happy. June could not take in whatever she was thinking and seeing. She didn’t understand why it was not easy for Alex to follow whatever Vanessa wanted.
“Were you still on a morning run?” Vanessa asked and they exchanged glances with June. June rolled her eyes then smiled glaring at Brenda.
“Where else could we be this early morning mum?” Alex asked.
“But you took too long.” She said.
“No mum, I took my usual time, I even took less time today.” Alex responded and Ian was really enjoying the exchange since he knew why Vanessa was so concerned.
June had her eyes on Brenda who didn’t wait for the exchange and more of Vanessa’s random glances. She was not capable of exchanges and opted maintaining her cool when it came to anything about the family. She left the four outside and made inside the main house.
“Good morning sir.” Brenda greeted Joseph who was still having a lively chitchat with Sarah.
“Good morning Brenda. How was the morning run?” He asked.
Joseph was the most welcoming human being Brenda had met in her entire life apart from her mother. He was always talkative and willing to see everyone I his compound happy and had what they needed, regardless of who they are, provided they are in his compound.
“Always the best sir.” She replied with a smile.
“I think you left with Alex?” He asked.
“Um, Yes, He’s outside.” She answered making her way to the kitchen.
“Am I not getting a hug today?” Sarah asked with her usual smile.
“Come on mum, why not?”
Brenda hugged her mother and she noticed Alex’s trademark cologne and gave her daughter a glance. She was aware of was going on anyway and she was not against nor afraid of anything.
“Seems your daughter adores you a big deal.” Joseph said with his usual smile.
“My mum is my pearl; I really don’t have someone else left to adore.” Brenda replied instead and Sarah smiled looking at Joseph who smiled back at her immediately.
“I will take my leave Sarah, you do take care of yourself and everything that matters, okay?” Joseph said.
“Including your queen, huh?” Sarah asked.
“You know that’s for sure dear.” She said. “Give me a call in case of anything though I’m not taking long at the office.” He added before leaving.
He met Alex and Ian at the door and they had their usual father and son exchange giving some instructions to his boys. They would take over his businesses after allthus they needed to master the rules of money. Joseph always knew Alex was sharper when it came to money as compared to Ian who in some ways took after their mother. Ian was a book warm but he needed it anyway since he had a position to maintain unlike Alex who never bothered about books. Alex had already made up his mind about college and was constantly telling his father how he thought having a degree didn’t matter.
His father would agree with his son despite his young age since he too had his degree but had applied for jobs enough times to give up. He beckoned Alex to follow him after Ian left to his room. He had some files Ian had to deliver.
“So, what about Michael?” Alex asked.
“Yes, about that, Michael was to deliver his weekly report tomorrow but I need it today so I was thinking you can get the files and bring them to the office. I have already made a call to him.” Joseph said.
“What about Marion’s report?” Alex asked.
“I almost forgot that, that’s why I need a right-hand man you know.” Joseph said with a smile. “I hoping all the cars are in good condition?” He asked.
“Yes dad. I had checked with Victor yesterday and he also checked them in the morning as I was leaving for my run.” Alex responded.
“I will be waiting for the files in my office.” He said getting into his Mercedes Jeep. “Also do tell Ian to hurry up too, okay?” He added.
“Yes dad.” Alex replied.
Alex had not taken his breakfast yet, unlike everyone he was always the last to take breakfast except those few times their father ordered a common breakfast for everyone.
“Hey son,” Sarah greeted.
“Son?” Brenda interjected before Alex answered. “Are you planning to disown me mum?” She asked with a smile.
“Leave her alone. Breakfast is already cold I guess?” Alex asked.
“I can’t believe you two, so you have plotted to disown me, huh? Mum tell me Alex has bribed you already, I know he can.” Brenda said with a wink and smiling at Alex.
“I told you it won’t be long, now go claim your position to Vanessa, she would love another daughter.” Alex said and they ended up laughing. Brenda teased throwing a mug to Alex.
