––Third POV––

The date was September 1st, 2086. A small town four hours away from Daegu was peacefully sleeping, their lives boring and simple. A T.V. broadcast colorfully lighted the cracked and dirty sidewalk from a store window, the only audience was the wind that carefully blew throughout the streets and dark alleyways.

"Tonight at 9: Laboratory at Seoul General Hospital temporarily shut down as an unknown illness affects seven patients. Possible links to two patients at Sydney Southwest Private Hospital, three from Daegu Central Hospital, and three additional patients from Busan Children's Hospital. Stay tuned for more," a lady dressed in red spoke, her black curls bounced as she enunciated each word with fake sympathy, her eyes dull with boredom.

The townspeople knew very little about the lab that was built a mere four miles away in the nearby forest from their humble abode. They were told it was built for government purposes only, which was why it was built near such a small town and not in the middle of a bustling city. There were several rumors but none knew the truth...

"Location and Retrieval Mission Complete," a gruff voice spoke while a man in a white lab coat wrote on a clipboard.

"Success?" The man in the coat asked. The first man pointed to a small observation window placed in the middle of a metal door. The assumed scientist peeked inside and nodded his head in approval.

"Information?" he requested.

"Name, Jeon Jungkook, age three. Parents deceased, same as the others," the two men turned back to the window and stared at the toddler who slept soundly in a small hospital bed, a thin gray blanket draped over the tiny body.

"His new name is Subject 16," the scientist stepped away from the pale toddler's door and walked down the hallway followed by the other man, passing fifteen identical doors.

To the outside world, the patients passed away, all orphans. No one to mourn them, no one to blink an eye at their sudden disappearance. They were all taken to the government lab in the forest.

––Five years later 2091––

Fifteen boys lounged in a dull concrete room. Everything was gray or white, even their clothes. The boys were known to the adults as subjects, but to each other, they had names. One particular boy sat on a stiff couch, his head laid lazily on the back and his eyes were closed.

"Jin hyung! Come play with me!" A small boy, aged eight, called out to the sitting boy.

"Not right now Jungkook. I have a headache," Jin, aged thirteen, answered. His eyes squeezed together tightly and he put his hand over them, blocking the fluorescent lights. A few giggles were heard from the other side of the room as other boys played.

Before Jungkook could retort, the doors slammed open, revealing a man with a lab coat. His hair was short and a few gray hairs could be seen if one looked hard enough.

"Subject 01. You are to report to the black room immediately. All other subjects are to return to their respective rooms. Punishments are to be expected if one misbehaves," the man said as his dead eyes scanned the room, stopping at each boy as if they were train stops and his eyes were the train.

"Who is not here?" The man demanded as each boy held their breath, afraid to answer.

"Subject 13, sir," Chan, also known as Subject 05, answered monotonously.

"Why is he not here?" The man questioned in an authoritative tone, his eyes narrowed at the boy who had answered.

"He wasn't feeling well, sir. He was really pale and kept complaining about his head hurting. I think he is sick, sir," another boy responded, Subject 06, but his real name was Hoseok or Hobi for short. He was eleven years old.
