Vanessa woke the next morning to the whispers of men in her forest. Early as it was, the village people stomped about the woods in search for the witches black cat. Much too tired to worry about their feeble attempts to steal her key, Vanessa locked the doors tight and called upon a shadow monster to run off her unwanted guests.
As noon neared Vanessa finally started upon her day. She collected plants, flowers, berries, and mushrooms from her forest as her bread rose in the oven, and her stew simmered upon the fireplace. She walked home, her basket full of goodies and her belly full of fresh blueberries, huckleberries, and mint. A familiar face welcomed her as she broke the barrier of the woods. The kind merchant boy smiled to her and waved as she neared. He held out a large basket to her for her to take.
"What's this?" she asked him sweetly. "A diversion to distract me while a friend takes my lovely cat and key?"
The kind eyed man simply laughed and shook his head. "No, quite the opposite. These are for you and her. If used in moderation it should last you for quite a while."
Vanessa looked at the man confused. "What do you mean?"
"Well..." he started "I see the way the men chase after your poor Ruby when she is at the market for you, so I decided to bring your usual order over for you. Its everything you may need plus some. I even added plenty of her cookies." he smiled and turned away as tho he was about to leave. "Be careful." He added with a serious tone. "Those men are dangerous."
"I can take care of myself they--"
"I know that miss Vanessa." he interrupted "I was talking about your poor cat. Please keep her out of such danger after this. I cant stand seeing such a lovely creature so hurt."
And without another word he turned and left, leaving Vanessa behind with her thoughts and gift.
