It was dark and very dusty. It's been years since I've gone up here for anything. There wasn't much up here, just a few chairs, chandeliers, bed frames, old clothes, family photos, toys, and in the far left corner were four boxes with Cory's name written on all of them.
I slowly start walking towards them. Other then his letter I haven't seen any of Cory's belongings since the funeral. The household pretty much avoids coming up here. I get to the boxes and take the first one off the top. It's a little heavy so I placed it on the floor and open it.
It was full of all old clothes, from T-shirts to hoodies. I put it off to the side and grab another box. Surely he wouldn't leave it in his clothes. This one was a lot heavier, it contained all of his books he read. I went through book after book looking through every single page to see if he may have stuck a note or message within the pages but I found nothing.
I tossed the box to the side and got the next, just a bunch of medals from high school. I'm at the last box but before I begin to look through the box, it finally hits me. Cory had a jacket he always wore. It was his favorite. I quickly get up and grab the box full of clothes, I dumped it all over the hard wood floor. I toss all the other clothes to the side until I get to what I want. After searching for a while I finally found it. The jacketwas a grey zip up with two interior pockets that zipped up as well. I quickly open the first one, there was nothing in it. I open the second one, still nothing. Where the hell could he have hid it? "Think Jasper, think." I say to myself irritated.
I run over to the last box and open it, there was only a small statue shaped as a bat, a couple of video games, and his old PS3. With out thinking I through the bat across the room, it hit the wall and shattered into a million pieces.
Damn it, what have I done? I walk over to clean up my mess and something catches my eye. A note was sticking out from under one of the pieces. I pick it up and tuck it into my pocket. If this was the note I wasn't going to take the chance of being caught with it here.
I look down at the bat and wonder why out of all places he picked to put it there. It takes me a while before I realize why. He put it in there because we made that bat together. I used to be in love with playing baseball as a kid. I shake my head and begin to pick up the pieces that laid on the ground.
Once the pieces are all picked up, I start to head towards my room. Before I begin to make my way towards the stairs I hear the doorbell go off.
"Uhm, mom are you expecting anyone?" The house was silent.
"Uhh, hello? Mom!" Still no answer, maybe she was in the restroom? I walk over to the door and answer it, as soon as I look up and see who it is my face drains of any emotion I had before. It was Alyson.
What was she doing here? What is going on? If this is another play date my mother decided to plan I think I'll pass. Alyson stares at me blankly and says "Well, I was hoping to talk inside but if you're going to look at me like that I'll come back later." She looks away and starts to fiddle with her necklace.
"I'm sorry-" I say surprised, "I didn't expect to see you at the door. I was rude the other day and left the room with out even saying a word to you. I apologize.""It's okay. It happens to the best of us I suppose.."
"Oh, uh. Come in? I don't know where my mom is, but please don't tell me she set this up again. I wasn't aware of it last time." I sounded irritated, I need to cut the girl some slack. She didn't do anything wrong.
"No, I came on my own to talk to you. One on one. I'm sure you know more about this entire mark thing than I do and I could use some help. I'm aware that your dad is the President of the CC, so that gives you an advantage of knowing what's right and wrong about it. I also want to talk about what happened a couple of nights ago.." She sounded a little shy. I look into her blue eyes, I notice that they're darker than before. "Alyson-" I begin. "Alyson, I'll talk to you, I'll let you in on everything I know about the mark, but I don't want to talk about what happened the other night. If you absolutely want to, I guess we can discuss it a little. That's it. In return I only ask that you do not tell anyone about this. Any of it."
She looks at me and for a second her lip twitches into a smile but simply fades.
"Shall we sit down and begin?" I ask warmly.
"That would be wonderful." She responds happily.
The sooner we get this over with the better. I need to know what the note says and being around Alyson makes it impossible to read. I hope this girl doesn't have a lot of questions and with that we begin.
