Eve did not sleep peacefully-she was plagued by horrible nightmares of her past life. All of the dreams started out somewhat normal, with her and someone she knew but they grew in terror until they changed.
It started in the Vintage Cafe with her friend that she had been going to met- Killain, a ginger, well built boy. He had hair that scraped his jaw line, and twinkling trickster eyes, but unlike many girls who knew Killain Eve never felt attracted to him. He was a good friend. In the dream they were sitting at their favourite table, each with a coffee. Eve was laughing at some joke Killain had just told and she smiled.
"It's good to get out and see you again." she said with a sigh. Killain smiled across the table.
"You too." then his brow furrowed deeply and he leaned on the table. "You look different." he said softly.
"I-I do? How so?" she asked, panic flaring in her chest.
"Like...metallic." Killain frowned, and leaned away in fright as her skin started to peel off her fingers and fall off to the ground, showing a shiny, blood-stained surface underneath. Killain sprang up, paling even further. Everyone else in the cafe had disappeared in the blink of an eye and it was just Eve, with her skin coming off and ghost-like Killain, standing in horror, in terror. His eyes narrowed and suddenly he was stretching, becoming something else altogether until he was something not human, a demon from the black pits of who knows where, a monster. And it spoke in the deepest voice possible.
"You're a robot."
she was jerked out her sleep by a noise- a door opening or closing, or voices or something. But she new it wasn't day time and despite the nightmare she was still exhausted.
The next one was worse.
This one featured a girl from her school, Hailey what's-her-face, who was considered popular. Eve didn't talk to her much, but didn't mind her either. They were in a mall shopping together with some of Hailey's friends. She had just pointed out some shoes to Eve and dargged Eve along with her to look at them. Hailey flashed a winning smile towards Eve who smiled a little in response.
"They're the cutest, aren't they?" Hailey cooed.
"Yeah, they're pretty nice." Eve agreed. The shoes were a pair of dull pink flats with graffti styled purple markings. In all honesty Eve didn't really like them. They were kind of tacky. Hailey seemed to pick up on this and she frowned.
"You don't like them, do you?"
"What? No, I never said that!" Eve defended herself.
"Well, you obviously feel that way!" Hailey was shouting now. The store seemed to be empty.
"So what if I do?!" eve asked, shouting in reply.
"I know your secret!" Hailey threatened out of the blue.
"What secret?" Eve asked, voice falling.
"That you're different. That you're a robot."
"No...no! I'm not!" Eve said, stunned.
"Yes you are! You're different from everyone else!" Hailey started to change, like Killain. She grew in height and weight, and wings sprouted from her back. Her hair fell out, she grew talons and her knees bent backwards. Her face became bear like with tusks and her skin became leathery and black. Her eyes were burning red pits that seared into Eve's soul, seeming to say you're different. You're different, and that's what you hate. You're different and that's not allowed. You're dead.
The nightmare faded into another featuring her old home town, and her legal guardian, Juliet a tall, pretty Asian girl who was extremely nice to her all the time. the only reason Eve even knew Juliet was her guardian was because of a legal document she found near her when she woke up outside of that building years ago. She had tracked down Juliet and lived with her and still used her name to live in the city to this day.
They had been talking contently about school work and Eve's social life when the topic changed into the government.
"I heard they came to your house." Juliet's tone was casual.
"Yeah. How did you know?" Eve replied.
Juliet shrugged and went on; "Word gets around. What did they want with you?"
"They wanted to see me because of something." Eve started sweating a little. Juliet squinted at her as she wiped her brow.
"Your sweat.....it's silver."
"What?"
"Your sweat is silver." Juliet repeated firmly, standing up and rubbing Eve's forehead, peeling away skin to reveal the metal surface underneath.
"You're....a robot. You're different." Juliet paused. "Which means you have to be studied."
Eve jumped out of her chair and started backing away, out onto the balcony of their 20th floor apartment. "What? No, no, please, Juliet!" she half-screamed. But it was too late. Like the last two nightmares Juliet transformed. She became raven-like and just as Eve was about to fall, a hand shot out and grabbed her. It was Juliet's, or the thing that had been posing as her.
"You have to be studied. You are different." again, it paused. "And once I'm done, I'll get rid of you."
More followed, each just as bad as the last. It ended with a terrifying nightmare of all the monsters of ehr nightmares becoming one and devouring her whole, leaving her to swim through the endless void that made up it's insides.
Oddly enough before the nightmare ended, before she would have died in the nightmare she had saw a light. But it was quickly snuffed out like a leaf caught in a strong wind.
Eve woke in a cold sweat, panting a little. It took her a moment to recall what had happened. As she did, she looked around the room, startled to find Viggo was already up and looking at her.
"What?" she snapped angrily.
"Nightmares?" he asked, turning away politely.
"Yes. Why?" she asked, as she arranged herself.
"There's plenty of them to go around." Viggo muttered under his breath. Eve got up to join him, glancing down at his hands. he was toying with something on his arm.
"What are you doing?" she asked, sitting down across from him.
"Adjusting a function. It's a little stiff." he smiled grimly.
"Let me see." Eve didn't know what made her ask. Maybe it was because of the kindness he had shown the night before. Viggo shrugged.
"I guess so." he moved closer to her and held out his right arm for her to look at.
Eve's brow frowned in thought as she looked at the part in question. It connected his wrist to his hand. It was a simple redoing of the hinge joint that is usually there on humans. It was underneath a few pannels of metal that had been lifted up to reveal the joint. After a moment she saw what was wrong. Or really, what needed oil.
"It just needs oiling." Eve said.
"Oh. that would explain it." Viggo backed up again, giving her space. there wasn't much else to do but talk, so he bought up what had been bothering him last night. "Eve, I have an....idea."
"What about it?" she asked.
"Well, I was thinking of...breaking out." Viggo let it set in.
"Breaking out? What makes you think we can pull it off?" Eve asked.
"Before I didn't have another person to work with. To plan with." he paused. "Besides two heads are better than one." he tapped his own head.
"Fair point. But we aren't armed. We don't even know the layout." she said.
"You may not know it, but I do. They've....taken me on some interesting trips. I know a way out."
"Do they have guards in here?" Eve wondered why she even entertained the thought of escape. It was an impossible dream, yet here it was, so close yet so far.
"Not on this route. It's only used for....." he trailed off, unwilling to say what it was used for. Eve nodded her understanding.
"Do you think we really have a chance?"
"If we time this correctly and use our heads, yes I think we do. I only ever needed another person." Viggo smiled. There was something about Eve, some happy, fresh feeling about her that rekindled hope in him. Maybe it was her youth or readiness. Maybe it was her awkward socializing. Maybe it was because they had problems with tech. But something about her reminded Viggo of a younger, female him. Like a little sister, he thought longingly.
Eve was nodding in agreement.
"Here's what I had in mind..." Viggo began.
