She didn't know what woke her up, why it did or how it did but she did wake up. It was still early in the morning and the dim pre-dawn light filtered in through a window in the grey room. There was two beds and a table between them. On the table two different sets of clothes were laid out. One of them was obviously for Viggo and the other her.
Eve clambered quietly out of the bed and held the outfit up. It was black tank-top made of some soft fabric, a pair of dark grey, loose fitting pants made of the same fabric as the top, and a brown jacket that came down to her upper thighs. It was one of those 'hidden zipper' coats. Everything was a little outdated, but it was much better than her tattered and dirty white clothes. There was a closet over in the corner, and it was empty so she used it as a changing room and left her clothes on the table.
Eve knew the way back to the large room where they had met the night before. It was nearly empty except for Antonius, who was reading an old book by a ComLet light. he looked up as Eve entered the room and gestured for to sit across from him as he entered a note in his ComLet. Eve took the seat and looked around.
"Good morning." Antonius said politely.
"Good morning to you too. What time is it?" Eve asked.
"Nearly six am. You've been asleep for around twelve hours." he paused, punched something else in the ComLet and continued, "Would you like something to eat?"
"Yes please. Just some toast." Eve looked at the book. It was written in a language she had never seen before. Antonius nodded, got up and returned a moment later with a plate of toast and a cup of water.
Eve ate breakfast in silence, wondering what to do with the day. Her hand reached up to scratch an itch and she felt the leather cord. the leather cord! It had a silver key on it, one that she had forgotten about for so long. Apparently the doctors hadn't cared to take it. Maybe she could figure out what it was for in the black market.
After she was done she took off the leather cord and showed it to Antonius. "Do you know where I could find out more about this?" she asked.
"Hmm. Yes, I do. The market hosts a vendor with a red and silver curtain. It's tattered and frayed, and the stall is owned by an old woman called Red Star. She'd know more about this...key of sorts." he paused, reading another line from his strange book. "Why don't you go now? Take the extra ComLet and be back here by seven. Viggo will be up and we can exchange stories."
"Sounds like a plan." Eve replied. Antonius got up, fetched the ComLet and gave it to Eve. She headed out the way she had come in last night.
The market wasn't very busy. There was a few people milling about and a few stalls were setting up, but compared to the day before it was tame. Eve looked around for the curtain that Antonius has described. She wandered about aimlessly, taking in the goods. There was weapons, body armor, jewelry, metal scraps and more, odder things. Finally she came across the right vendor.
She stepped up to the curtains and the feeble wooden counter. There was an assortment of relics, some she knew and some she didn't. Behind the counter was an old woman on a rocking chair. Her hair was nearly all grey, with a hint of red and her tanned skin was folded and wrinkly. She smiled at Eve and Eve smiled back, removing the cord.
"Good morning." Eve greeted.
"You as well. Are you looking to buy today, my dear, or sell?" the woman asked. eve struggled to remember her name.
"My...situation is a little different than either of those, miss. I have a key here that I would like to know more about." Eve placed the key and cord on the counter. The woman got up to look at it, holding it close to her eyes. She chuckled softly.
"Quite a key you have hear, dear. Very old, very old indeed." the woman took out a magnifying glass from under the counter, dusted it off and looked more closely at the key. "This dates back...oh, a hundred and fifty years, maybe two hundred. It's a wonder it survived." the woman rubbed something off it and her eyes widened. "Oh!"
"What is it?" Eve inquired curiously.
"There's an emblem here ,dear. A most curious one." she held the key out to Eve, laying her finger near a point at it's handle. "See the eyeball and the bird holding it?" Eve nodded. It was a beautiful carving, despite the dirt that had covered it. "The emblem is that of a group. A most secretive group. Call themselves the Solar Ravens. This here emblem, dear, is their symbol. I have no clue how you got it, but I want nothing to do with them." the woman retreated back to her chair. Eve finally recalled her name.
"But miss Red Star!" Eve said desperately. the old woman turned around, a confused look on her face.
"How do you know my name?" she hissed coming closer.
"A-Antonius sent me." Eve stuttered looking into the woman's face.
"Why didn't you tell me that earlier, dear. come, come with me." Red Star said leading Eve past the curtain and into the back of her stall. It was a tiny room surrounded by the same curtain as the one she had entered through. It was dimly let by an old lantern. There was few more relics in the room, but not many. There was table and a few chairs, one of which Red Star took. She gestured for Eve to take the other/. She sat down and Red Star gestured to see the key again. Eve laid it on the table. Red Star tapped it.
"The Solar Ravens. Oh what a group, with a bloody history. Assassins, mercenaries, thieves and bandits. Oh dearie, you do not want to get involved with them. They are the bane of our brave new world. They seek to brainwash us, to make everything old again. They cling to the old ways." Red Star looked up at Eve. "Whoever you gave you this key is dangerous, no matter if they are friend or foe. And they are either of the Solar Ravens or of their competing group, Moon Reachers."
"Moon Reachers?" eve's head was spinning with all the new information.
"Yes. they seek to help us progress. But they are just as dangerous, searching for answers to things we know not of. Dear, you must be careful. This key means both groups are watching you closely and those around you." Red Star got up and lead Eve back to the curtain. "You had better leave this place and soon." and pushed Eve out of the small room into the open space of the market.
Eve thought about the groups, and the woman's warning. If she was right then everyone she had just met was in danger. Viggo, Maria, Vincent, Antonius and all the others....people who she didn't even know very well.
The ComLet beeped loudly- it was seven.
She sighed heavily. Time to figure out all of this, she thought to herself.
A/N: sorry if this was a little confusing. I might be editing bits to later to make it more clear, but until then enjoy!
