Nathan's POV:
Although I've known Evan and his family for a long time, I feel uncomfortable showing up to their house uninvited. Hell, if it wasn't pouring down rain right now I think Id feel more comfortable sleeping at the park. Nevertheless, I eventually find myself skateboarding up to their house trying to gather up the courage to walk up the porch steps and ring their door bell. What am I suppose to say? My dad kicked me out? I got in his face because he's a drunk piece of shit? ...... maybe I should leave that part out.
Their home is large, made of red brick and decorated with tall white columns. Much nicer than what I grew up with, his family is definitely privileged. I remember how jealous I was when he got a brand new BMW for his 16th birthday. I was even more jealous when he crashed it senior year and so they bought him a new one . I can't help but roll my eyes when thinking about it, I know if I had done that the last thing my dad would have done was buy me a new car.
Eventually, I get the courage to grab my skateboard and march up to the porch. Without delay I quickly press the doorbell, refusing to give myself a chance to back out.
I sit there waiting patiently in the cold for a few seconds before I eventually hear the sound of high heels clacking against the hardwood floor getting closer and closer. When the door opens I see Evan's mom staring at me, she's blonde with blue eyes and long red fingernails. Her neck is sporting a shiny jeweled necklace and her face is done up with pink eyeshadow and pink lipstick.
"Nathan?"
I stand there awkwardly trying to come up with something to say. I've always looked at Evan's mom as my own since my own mother left me, and although she's always been real nice to me I've always felt as if Evan's parents are kinda uptight. This is why I'm always a bit uncomfortable around them.
"Good afternoon Mrs. Anderson, I-I was just in the neighborhood and I um can't go home, my dad kicked me out."
"Oh my goodness Honey! You don't have to say anymore sweetie Come in, we just sat down for dinner." She says stepping aside to let me in.
Once inside I see a familiar scene, I've been here many times as a teenager. A large chandelier hangs from the tall ceiling in the foyer and the entire house is spotless making me feel a bit uncomfortable. Following Evan's mom to the dining room, I see Evan and his father sitting at a big wooden dining table.
"Nathan!" Evan proclaims, his dark eyes light up when I walk through the archway. He has black hair , pale skin and a thin frame, he's also little on the shorter side standing about 5 feet 7 inches.
"What up man," I say sitting down next to him as his mother rushes off to the kitchen to grab me a plate of food. I thank her before she sets it down in front of me.
"Honey?" she says trying to get her husband's attention, he slowly looks up from the newspaper in front of him.
Evan's father is a serious man with glass and black hair peppered with grey streaks. He's employed as a congressman, that's how they were able to afford such a nice place.
"Nathan here was just telling me his father kicked him out of the house, isn't that awful?"
"Well son," Mr. Anderson says, "you're welcome to stay with up as long as you need, we have plenty of rooms upstairs"
"I wouldn't want to get in your way, I can just sleep on the couch in the pool house" I respond.
Truthfully Evan's parents and house intimidate me a little, it's all a lot different then what I grew up with. "I think I'd be more comfortable in the pool house with Evan anyways" I add.
"Well, id hate to charge you rent to sleep on the pull out couch so as long as you stay in college I'm sure you living here rent-free won't be a problem."
"Thank you, sir," I say nodding my head in his direction.
I look over to see Evan smiling with excitement or was it nervousness?
——————————————————————————-
"I hope you didn't mind me insisting I sleep here, you're parents kinda freak me out."
"Don't worry about it, it'll be fun having you here," Evan says as we walk into the pool house that resembles a small home with a kitchen, one bedroom, a bathroom and a pull-out couch in the small living room area.
I've slept here many times before, mostly drunken nights after high school parties or after heated arguments with my dad. It doesn't take me long before I start to make myself at home, kicking off my shoes before spreading down on the pull out bed.
It definitely isn't the most comfortable, the mattress is thin with metal bars underneath that hurt my ribs whenever I rollover.
" you wanna watch a movie?" Evan asks before plopping down on the bed next to me.
"Sure but I have to be up early for practice tomorrow".
We lay there hardly watching the movie focusing more on our conversation as I explain to him all the details of the massive fight I had with my dad just hours earlier. It's been a while since Evan and I have gotten to spend some time together between baseball, starting college and my crazy girlfriend.
Speaking of the devil our conversation is interrupted by my ringing phone, I try to ignore it but I soon regret that decision because she immediately calls me again. " It's Ashley" I say.
"Figures" Evan scoffs.
She can be a bit dramatic sometimes so Evan and her tend to bump heads. Honestly though I wish they would just get along it can be kinda exhausting dealing with the both of them, it's like having two girlfriends .
I answer the phone and immediately my ears are met with the sound of her harsh high pitched voice.
"Where the fuck are you? I've been texting you all night and you're not home NATHAN! You better not be cheating on me! Where the fuck are you?"
"NATHAN!!" She screams when it takes me a moment to respond."Will you chill out. I'm at Evans house, my dad kicked me out and I'm staying here now. So if you don't mind ASHLEY, I have to be up early."
I hang up the phone.
" Why are you even dating her? you don't seem to like each other very much."
"Because she's hot" I respond jokingly, but Evan doesn't seem to take it well.
"Whatever, I'll let you get some sleep then," he says.
I watch as he walks into his room shutting the door behind him. He's usually this sensitive so I shrug it off, I think that's how we get along so well, he's always so serious while I try to just go with the flow.
Eventually, I fall asleep to the sound of my phone buzzing through my pillow, usually in these situations its best to ignore her till she calms done. I learned my lesson last time when she scratched me across the face for not showing up to her parent's house for dinner.
