Do you know just how much trash ends up on the side of our roads? You can go three times around the equator only by using litters, paper/plastic cups, plastic forks, and spoons. Annually, Americans create 254 million tons of trash. Yes, there are organizations that go around and pick up roadside trash, but it is still a big problem that we need to do something about.
Litter often refers to trash that someone has left lying around in an open or public place. A wonderful, and common example, of an open or public place, would be a roadside. Litter can carry numerous amounts of bacteria. When the trash is left alone, it makes a great place for bacteria to form and multiply. With it being out in the open, the exposure between people and bacteria can be harmful. It can even lead to outbreaks like cholera and typhoid. If a piece of litter is sharp and someone doesn't notice it, they could injure themselves with it. The bacteria can get into the wound and cause an infection. If an infection is serious enough and not treated, it can be fatal. If the litter is deadly, shouldn't people throw it away in a trash can in the first place so this doesn't happen?
Litter is not only harmful to people, but it is also harmful to the environment. If the climate is hot and dry enough, a fire can start. Many of the items that are commonly littered are flammable and feed into the fire. They help the fire spread. A fire can destroy habitats and kill the animals that live in them. Humans need animals to survive. Without animals, humans would also perish.
This project was an amazing experience, and it helped me make a difference in my community. I learned that impacting the world does not take much. Anyone can do it. All you need is the will. Roadside trash is a serious problem that needs fixing.
