Chapter 3: Hot Springs

 Damn it all. She blew it. Kairii thought this as she shed her kimono and slipped into the water of the shallow hot spring she'd discovered wandering through the forest. Well, directed wandering. She stayed out of sight of Sesshomaru and Jaken, but she did follow them. Tracking was one thing she had learned, across multiple realms. They were off somewhere nearby, and so she'd decided to bathe. Couldn't hurt. The hot spring was part of a series of springs, but she'd chosen one that was fairly remote, a boulder in the left hand side dividing it into two jointed springs. She was leaning against that boulder, contemplating how the hell she was supposed to get on Sesshomaru's good side now. Yeah, technically she still had a vouch from Jaken, but how much would it be worth if Sesshomaru thought she'd be prone to bolting? She wasn't. She'd just taken one look at that pair of icy eyes and decided she did not want to wait and see if he would be mad about a human touching, much less kissing him.

She was out of demonic power, too. Not that she'd be prone to kissing anything she came across, InuTaisho's power was kind of an accident. How was she supposed to know that kissing bones would give her an ancient dog demon lord's power?! She sighed and tried to relax. She was in a hot spring! She had never visited one! The least she could do was enjoy it.

She was so lost in thought, she almost missed the splash behind her, on the other side of the boulder, which suggested she was no longer alone. She stilled. If it was a demon, she couldn't move. But if it was a human, she'd be able to slip away undetected. She just had to wait and figure it out.

There was silence for a long time, broken only by a woosh and the crackle of a fire. So, they were camping out next to the spring. She glanced around. In the light of the moon, she noticed something dark staining the water that joined this pool with the one on the other side. She blinked. Ink? No. She slid a little closer and delicately sniffed it. Blood. Blood and...

And a tantalizing, masculine scent that teased even her sensitive human nose. It wasn't as strong as she remembered, she'd lost InuTaisho's senses, but the alluring scent was still strong enough for her. And so, she knew who bathed on the other side of the pool. She straightened slowly, dipping carefully lower into the water. The steam from the hot springs, and the water she was in, carried away her scent, thankfully, but Sesshomaru would not be pleased to hear what he would assume was an eavesdropping human, or worse, a peeping tom. Well, she was female, but either way. She couldn't get out until he went to sleep, but she couldn't stay in the water, knowing Sesshomaru was naked on the other side, and that she was as well.

She flushed as she abruptly pictured what Sesshomaru might look like without his clothes on. She shook her head a little, refusing to consider the notion again. No way! The world, or fate, or whatever controlled her realm changing demanded she serve Sesshomaru to the story's end. She would not risk her feelings! Not this time! Especially not with a cold-hearted, almost cruel demon she would have to work hell and high water to just be able to serve! The universe couldn't make her love him. Er...could it?

"Milord." Jaken's voice. She tensed. If Jaken came to bathe over here, she was going to have to cover her eyes and work hell to keep him from blabbing. "That Kai woman. She seemed no more than a mortal, yet she lent you strength beyond a human's. Was she a demon?" they were talking about her?!

"Did you not ask?" Sesshomaru's voice was cold and smooth, and came from directly behind Kairii. They were practically back to back!

"Aye, milord!" Jaken said, "And she gave me a most puzzling response."

"Intriguing." Sesshomaru replied. "What was her response?" Kairii leaned her head back against the rock. Great. She had to listen to a conversation recap. So far, feudal Japan was her least favorite place. Her favorite being a crime-fighting hero by the name of Thunderbird. And also that same place was where her realm jumping sister had settled.
