-Nate-
I am very excited to go to the Long Island Sound. But I could feel Sync is out of it. Granma’s crying when she told us that we’ll be going. She sounded happy but deep inside I could feel something not right.
Uncle Grover eyes the two of us occasionally, checking something behind us. He then fished a pen from his pocket.
“Nate. Your Dad wanted me to give you something.” He handed me a pen.
“A pen? What will I do to this pen?” I said looking at the pen. It is simple, ball point pen. On the side was inscribed the word ‘Anaklusmos’. “What does Anaklusmos mean?”
“Riptide. It’s very handy when something bad happened.” He said then opened the glove compartment and brought out an ancient looking knife and a New York Yankees cap along with a tin can. He took a bite and chow the can.
“Whoa! You’re eating cans? It may cut your mouth.” Sync blurted.
Uncle Grover produces a goat like sound. “No son. I do this when I’m nervous.”
“What are you? Nobody in their right minds would bite a can and chew it like a pudding. What are you nervous of? Is something bad going to happen?” Sync asked again.
“You’ll find out soon.” He said with a half-smile. “Oh by the way. Annabeth want me to give this to you.” He handed Sync the cap and a kife.
“Why is Mom so unfair? She gave you a knife and a cap. Dad gave me a pen. Now that’s fair.” He just shot me a blank stare.
“Kids, we’re here.” Uncle Grover announced. I took a look around and found nothing except hills and trees. We are in a middle of nowhere.
“Where are we? Is this where Mom and … what on earth is that?” Sync shrilled. We all turned to where Sync was looking.
“Holy cow.” I bellowed. It is a huge cow, almost 10 feet tall and looks like sniffing the air.
“Why hadn’t I smelled that earlier? Oh gods.” Uncle had his face scrunched. He unbuttoned his jeans and threw his crutches.
“What are you doing at times like this? We are going to die isn’t it? I asked. The cow still hadn’t noticed us.
“I have a knife.” Sync said quivering but he positioned like he was going to attack it. Uncle had his pants undressed and I swear to earth that I wanted to laugh so hard.
“You have goat legs?” I said as I tried my best not to laugh or even smile.
“Yeah. And don’t you dare burst that laugh you are holding right there for it might attract the Cretan Bull.”
“Cretan Bull? Dad said that he is the father of the Minotaur. And in one of his stories, his first monster killed is the Minotaur. Does he want revenge for his son’s death?” Brainy Sync strikes again.
“Yes, I could sense he wanted revenge.”
“Yeah whatever. Is this a dream? I mean how are we going to kill that or even injure that. We are just a team of two fourteen year old scrawny kids and a half goat. That’s what we call fair.” I exasperated.
“Uncap that pen I gave you Nate. Sync put on your cap.”
I uncapped the pen and suddenly it grew into a sword. It is almost three feet long and looks like it is made of gold. Once I touched the blade, I felt a strong connection with it just like I have with the sea. I felt a strong surge to attack the monster in front of me but I know it’s not the right move. I looked at Sync and I could see jealousy in his face. He quickly put on his cap and he disappeared on the spot.
“What happened to Sync?” I am freaking out.
“Nothing. I’m still here.” Sync said.
“Where?” Then I waved my hand in front of me like blind man would. He appeared once again.
“Hey you there again. Oh that is Mom’s cap and knife from our dream.” I said and hugged him, sword still in my hand.
“Nate, be careful with the blade. I t could kill Sync upon contact. And Sync, that is Annabeth’s Invisibility cap. Oh gods, the bull disappears.” I quickly raised my sword and Sync put on his cap. I sharpened my senses; I know I needed those to survive.
Then the bull appeared behind us, running at full speed. I felt panic crept up my throat and I cannot move a muscle. Fifty feet left before he scrunches me with his feet, or should I say hooves. I sidestepped before he scrunched me with his hooves, but he calculated my move and stopped in front of me. His tail wagging wildly behind him, and hit Uncle Grover. He passed out on the side of the road and murmuring something incomprehensible. I could see someone carrying him farther the side the road. I know it is Sync using his cap. Why does Uncle Grover pass out at a time like this? Okay, I have this enemy in front of me, sneering at me and I am just here standing and thinking of something other than my life. I heard Sync’s voice calling my name and before I know it, he is running full speed in my direction. I tried raising my sword and poised to attack when it bellowed loudly, I felt the hairs on my nape stand out. He is already bleeding on his neck area, and like right on cue, Sync appeared on his nape, his cap fell of, still stabbing the monsters nape. I ran forward and slashed my sword through the monster’s calf and stabbed his thigh. He grabbed Sync and threw him behind him before he kneeled on his injured knee. I slashed through his torso and it begin to turn into a sand, no i think it is sulfur because it is yellow and smells like one. His horns are the only one left of him. Uncle Grover woke up a after a while.
“What happened? Where’s the Cretan Bull? Oh, Your first spoil of war.” Uncle Grover said. “Where’s Sync?”
I rushed to where Sync was thrown and found him in an uncomfortable position. I am beginning to cry when Uncle Grover played a wooden harmonica. Sync is still not moving. Uncle then fished an odd looking square and fed him one. Sync moved a bit.
“Ambrosia dear. Foods of the gods. This is nectar, drink of the gods. Don’t overeat because it may burn you until your essence. This will only be used during emergency. Remember that, when going to quests, bring a bunch of ambrosia and nectar.” Uncle explained. I am starting to feel fatigue taking over me.
“I just wanted to rest and take a br…” Everything went black.
