Just as I got up to clear my plate, a sturdy knock sounded at the door, as I realized what time it was.
"Will someone get the door? It's Athena."
I heard the sound of the door open, and Pandora and her talking in the front hall, as I jogged into the bathroom to slip into some new clothes that didn't stink like the airport. I pulled open my suitcase, and ripped out my long and flowy white dress-carefully decorated with dandelion prints, and a black bikini, just in case I had an opportunity to go swimming. As I pulled the bikini over my head, and slipped the dress over my shoulders I made a note to take my hair out of it's ugly messy bun. No way was I going to prance around all of Greece in my airport clothes. I skipped down the stairs, and slipped my tan sandals on, walking up to the door.
"Sorry for keeping you waiting Thea"
"It's no problem. Are you ready to go?"
"Yep" I said "Bye guys!"
"Antío, Circe!" They all called back, as I slipped out the door, and onto the hard concrete flooring. "So, are you ok to go to the beach?" Anthea asked.
"Ya sure. As long as we get some ice cream. I brought some drachma with me, so I can get you a cone too." I said, bumping into her gently with my shoulder.
"I am one hundred percent on board with that plan." she giggled
As we walked down the path towards the beach, I laced my hand through hers, swinging our arms as we strolled down towards the ocean. This had been one of our favourite places to play together- from freeze tag to trying to use a ouija board one, we loved to sneak away from our caretakers and have endless fun, all down by the beach. I used to love pretending we were both mermaids, or playing house, especially when Thea wasn't throwing rocks at passerbys. That made me snort, remembering when she threw a rock at an older boy who she thought was laughing at her. Didn't go down too well with her parents.
"What are you laughing about?" She asked me.
"When you threw a rock at Matty" I let out another giggle, as she sighed "I was a weird kid.''
"I agree completely" I said, slipping off my sandals, and hopping over a rock, into the sand.
"What time is it?" She asked me, leaning herself against an old tree to slip off her flip flops. "Seven fifteen. We still have loads of time"
"Perfect" She walked towards me and we linked arms once again, trailing down towards the ocean.
"You brought a bathing suit right?" I asked her
"Always" She said, snapping the strap of her baby blue bikini against her shoulder. "You want to go for a swim?"
"Do you really need to ask?" I said, pulling my dress over my head.
"I suppose not"
She pulled her skirt off and began to unbutton her white shirt, as I pulled my hair into a neat high pony. "Last one in is a ágria skapáni" I said, shoving her the opposite way, as I began to jog down towards the beach.
"No fair!"
Athena was much faster than me, and easily passed me within a second, diving into the salty ocean water.
"Fuck you" I said, splashing some water her way, as she dove under the surface. I swam under the waves after her, the sunset lighting up the warm summer water, pushing off of the sand, back up to the surface after her.
"The waters lovely." I said, breaking through the surface, and trailing my hand through the salty waves. "It's perfect" She said, swimming towards me, and pulling herself up onto my tan shoulders.
"You are way too fat for my back" I said, pushing her legs upwards, causing her to tip over backwards into the water.
"You are so done"
She dove under the water, and before I knew what was happening, grabbed my ankle, and pulled me underneath with her. I managed to suck in a breath before diving under, but as soon as I was fully submerged, I broke away, in an attempt to playfully tackle her. She let out a screech, as she pushed me away, causing me to burst out in laughter, coming back to attempt to push under.
"Fuck you" She barely got out, before doubling over from laughter. She turned to float on her back, as she calmed down and I regained my strength. I flipped over to join her, as we both lay, panting, and staring at the stars.
In the midst of my tranquility, her hand reached out to me, and I took it in mine carefully shifting from my place in the sand, and trailing my thumb gently against the back of her hand.
"Isn't it just beautiful?" She said gazing deeply at the moon, as the sun finished setting. "It really Is I replied, turning to look at her.
"It really is"
