(A week into the Apocalypse.)

(Maddie's Pov!)

We sat around a fire while we cooked up some beans. Mackenzie's father went out to find some food for the next few weeks.

"I look back and wonder what went wrong..." I muttered making MacKenzie look up. She was sitting with her arms crossed over her knees staring into the fire.

"It all went wrong when the government hid the truth from us." She spoke. "People panicked over the originally illness and ignored the real problem. They took all the supplies and people began dying. The ones who died who had the illness turned into zombies."

"Yeah.. if people could just work together in a crisis.. maybe less people would have died.." Jason said.

"We are still missing some key people.." Sebastian spoke. He threw a stick into the fire and sat down by me.

"Matthew.. Philip... and Emily." Jonas muttered. "I'm glad we found you when we did." Sebastian said putting a hand on Jonas's shoulder.

"Yeah.. After I lost my parents and brother.. I didn't know what else to do." Jonas spoke. "I still don't know what to do.."

"I don't think anyone knows what to do." I said looking over at Jonas. MacKenzie stood up and faced away from everyone. She looked down at the ground and said "I know what to do. Survive." She walked off towards the other side of the parking lot.

I frowned looking back at the fire. "She hasn't been the same." I spoke. I thought my buddy would be the same and be there to comfort me, but I guess the apocalypse changes you.

"We've all changed. After everything we've lost it's normal for us to be different." Sebastian said.

"Hey." Mr. Tattaran said locking the gate. "I found some Juice, Canned Soups, and a Bag of apples." He said setting everything down by the fire. Sebastian's eyes locked onto the apples and he smiled.

"I guess not everyone changes." I said with a small laugh. My sister stayed right by my side not moving or speaking that much. It broke my heart knowing she was upset.

"Tomorrow I'll be breaking us into teams." Mr. Tattaran said.

"Maddie and Abba you'll stay here and look after the supplies."

"MacKenzie, Sebastian, and I will go out scavenging for food and medicine."

"Jonas And Jason you two will work on pushing boxes, cars, and other things to strengthen our fence."

"Okay!" I said with a smile. Mackenzie's Dad was a born leader and pretty smart. I was surprised to see how well he handled almost every situation. He somehow calmed MacKenzie down after she seen Emily's house in flames in only a few seconds.

It made me feel safe.. knowing we had someone who knew what to do in charge of us. He treats us all like we are his own children and it's comforting. If only dad was here.. or mom...

(THE NEXT DAY!)

MacKenzie hooked her katana to her belt. She pulled it out of the sheath and looked at the blade before walking towards the gate. Sebastian followed her holding a knife and his pistol. He put the knife into a small little bag on his hip and followed MacKenzie and her father.
