A different smell filled my room when I woke up. The sun had just risen and was throwing early morning rays across the yard behind the house. If I woke up early enough I would make some coffee and go to the living room to watch the sun rise. This morning was a late one for me.
The smell of a different male was in the air mixing with coffee and eggs. I rolled over staring at the closed white bedroom door. I left it open when I fell asleep. Closed doors have no meaning for me. Busting one of them down was easier than picking the damn lock.
Sarah's light footsteps headed down the hall and paused at my door. I'm guessing she noticed the closed door too. She continued down the hallway and greeted the man in the kitchen. Their voices were muffled but I could still hear what they were saying. "Did you close her door?" She asked. Silence. "She normally keeps it open that's why I asked." Some shuffling for a plate and a cup echoed around the kitchen, "I'm going to see if she wants to join me in the master so you can take her room." Sarah said. "That's not a problem, I like the couch." He said.
"Lucka, she can't get out. She's tried." Sarah said. "How do you know." He asked. "Because I asked her why she was trying to open the windows. She said she was looking for a way out." Sarah answered. He scoffed, it was low but I still heard it. "You have trouble catching sarcasm?" He asked. Now it was her turn to laugh, but she said nothing. "She has not lied since she got here." Sarah said. "We have not lied to her either. So if she asks you something, answer her honestly. That's all we ever did since she got here."
They kept their silence for a few minutes and I decided to go out and see how many buttons I can push on the new guy. After accidently threatening Daniel and Sarah a little less than a whole week ago I decided to not push my luck with them anymore. But this guy. He was fair game!
"Good morning." Sarah called as I walked into the kitchen. I recognized the man leaning against the counter. He was in that group that met me outside of the van. My eyes narrowed as I sized him up. "Katy." Sarah warned. I walked over to him and reached into the cupboard beside his head for a cup. We did not drop each other's gaze until after I got some coffee, examined it, smelled it, then obnoxiously tested it.
"So I hear I'm moving rooms." I told him. He shook his head, "I'm fine with the couch." I laughed, "no one is fine with the couch. Stop being a stuck up ass muncher and move into the other room." His eyes got a hard look in them, "I don't appreciate being told what to do by the likes of you." I smiled and cozied up to him with a sly smile on my face, "I run this bitch if you have not noticed. The more I fuck up the longer our stay is."
"This is going to be a fun week." Sarah said getting up from her seat to deposit her plate and cup in the sink. "I'm only here for a week." He informed me. I nodded, "interesting. You think that this is only for a week." He watched me slink off to the living room to rummage through the boxes they brought in early this morning. I decided to give him a small break, plus I did not want to run out of button pushing ideas on the first day.
"We got chess!" I called out to Sarah. "I hate chess!" She yelled back. "Well too bad, you're playing!" The new guy and I said at the same time. We locked eyes for a second then I busied myself with the remainder of the boxes. I was not good at chess, and now I was going to have to get good at chess so I could beat him... awesome.
"Some of those are mine." He said separating a box from the others. "Interesting." I said before moving to another box. "Jackpot!" I said grabbing one of the heavier boxes and taking it to Sarah's room. "Hey I come bearing gifts." I told her. "Awesome, the book shelf was getting a little bare after you came in." She said. My hands were too full to knock so I was glad she had her door open.
