16. Annabeth

I set town my backpack, stuffed full of clothes on my bunk in the Athena cabin and sat down. It felt good to be home. I had been living on and off with my dad, going between Gotham and San Francisco with him and when things got to be too much back to camp for a week. Then I would always try again with my dad.
"Hey Annabeth"
I looked to the door.
"Hey Malcolm"
"You're back early"
"Yeah" I said "Percy kinda blew up a school"
"Of course it was Percy" he laughed
Malcolm Pace was my half brother and second in command in the Athena cabin. Like me he had blonde hair and grey eyes although his were more blue than mine.
"I can't believe you l-" Hayden started
"I don't like him" I rolled my eyes "why are we even talking about this. Selina is going to be around to check the cabin"
"Well Tim is the only one who hasn't made his bed"
"Where is Tim?" I asked
Hayden shrugged "don't know him and a couple other campers were going to the beach I think"
"Well the least he could've done was made his bed" Malcolm said
I sighed and stood. Tim's bunk was on the very far end of the cabin and he was the only Athena kid without a bunkmate. His bed was messy and I guessed he'd been gone all day because usually he would keep it neat.
I straightened the sheets and blanket, moving the book on his bed to the shelf in the corner.
"What are you doing?"
"Getting us the first shower slot" I said
I straightened his pillow and felt something under it.
I grabbed the small bundle and pocketed it.
"What was that?" Malcolm asked
"Nothing" I answered how had Tim gotten these? Sure he helped from the cave sometimes but there would be no reason for him to have these. I went back to my bunk and grabbed the gloves out of my back pocket.
"Huh" I muttered why would Tim have these? No way Bruce would let him anywhere near a criminal.
I pocketed the gray gloves again and walked out the door.

"So what's new Tim" I asked sitting in a tree above him and hanging upside-down.
He sat below me after I had convinced him to go for a walk in the woods and talk.
"Eh nothing" he said
"Oh?" I asked "been keeping out of trouble?"
"What's this about Annie?" He teased
"Don't call me Annie" I hissed
"Okay" he laughed "what's this about?"
I sighed "I found these" I grabbed the gloves from my pocket and flipped down. "Under your pillow. No way Bruce would let you get them so..."
He sighed "yeah....I kinda...stole them?"
I studied him then broke out laughing "you stole them? From where?"
"The cave" he answered "I found them in the equipment room. I think they're Percy's-er-were Percy's. They were just sitting there so I...took them."
I laughed again "without him noticing?"
"Yes"
I doubted that. Bruce was keen on everything I had never gotten away with sneaking out, stealing anything, or even startling him. My guess is he was waiting to see what Tim did with it.
"So what are you gonna do with it"
He shrugged and ran his hands through his black hair. "Well they don't work. If they're even the same as yours."
I studied them closer
"Do they fit?"
"Huh?"
"Do they fit you?"
He nodded so I handed them back.
"Then they're yours-"
I was cut off by Tim shouting and tackling me to the ground.
I grunted and lay on the ground. I twisted, grabbing my dagger from the sheath on my hip.
I brushed my hair out of my face and looked for the monster ahead of me.
I saw something running towards me.
I frowned jumping back again looking to Tim. Should we attack? I mean it was attacking us but still it was just a Harpie.
It dove at me again, talons outstretched and I dove out of the way as it muttered something inaudible.
"Tim?" I asked "we can't just...kill it"
I dodged another attack and brushed my hair away again.
"We might not need to" he said quietly
I looked towards him and followed his gaze to the harpie twitching on the ground. She hissed and writhed and I noticed she was foaming at the mouth.
"Rabies?" I asked
"I don't think rabies affects mythical animal." He said
The harpie calmed and stopped moving.
"What should we do?" Tim asked
"Figure out what-
"τo τέλος είναι κοντά" the harpie screeched one last time before going still again.
I stared down. Her feathers we ruffled but other than the foam nothing pointed towards anything weird.
"What did she say?" Tim asked after a second
"The end is near" I answered "i-i think my Greek is rusty"

We told Malcolm what had happened and went to work studying the many books we had in the Athena cabin to see if we could figure out what had happened to the harpie. Later I went down to the lake with Percy and Tyson, who had just returned from the forges of the cyclops. Then I trekked back to the cabin to do more studying.
"Annabeth!" Tim said "Annie"
I sat up from the desk, bolting awake "don't call me Annie"
"You were asleep" he said "it's time for dinner"
"I wasn't asleep" I muttered
"Okay" he said "but dinner"
I sighed and shook my head before running my hands through it in an attempt to straighten it.
"All boys are the same"
"Huh?" Malcolm asked
"All you think about is food" I answered
Tim laughed "you're right"
"Speaking of" Malcolm said "you're going to make us late...Annie"
I hit him and rolled my eyes "you guys are worse than Percy"
"Percy, Percy Percy" Hayden muttered "all you talk about is Percy...maybe you-"
I hit him "no! C'mon let's go to Dinner"
I grabbed clipped my dagger back on my belt and led my cabin towards the pavilion.

I bolted awake to a knock at the door.
"It's three in the morning-" I started
"There's a monster at the border" Jake Mason said from the other side of the door "Athipian Dragon?"
"Aethiopian Drakon?" I asked
"Yeah that" he said "Chiron said to wake-"
I opened the door, still in the sweats and a ruffled camp T-shirt I had fallen asleep in. I carried my dagger.
"Oh uh...hi" he said pushing the dagger tip away "don't stab me"
"Sorry" I said as Malcolm stumbled to the door
"What's going on?" He asked
"Wake up everyone. There's an Aethiopian Drakon at the border."
He looked to me, then Jake wondering if this was a prank.
"Let's go" I said as Malcolm turned back into the cabin
"It's just over here" Jake said before plunging into the darkness with me and my siblings not far behind.
