Pamela's P.o.v

Something was terribly wrong at the office. Generally Miss Bose's office looks like this on a typical day –
Silent, nervous people running around here and there, files in hand. No tomfoolery going on, no gossips, only work. Everything is calm and controlled. There's no space for relaxation in Miss Bose's office, except during lunchtime. Even then no one dared to fool around her.

But today was different. It was quiet as usual, but the air wasn't the same. It felt brooding and tense. It almost felt like a storm was coming. And when I entered Miss Bose's cabin, the air suddenly felt cooler. Her face always looks menacing, but today it was strangely calm, but fierce.

The odd thing was – if on one hand Miss Bose was fuming silently, Neil on the other hand seemed oddly happy ! Twice he dared to laugh loudly in the presence of Miss Bose, and she said nothing to him ! Since morning, he didn't even lift a finger, and Miss Bose didn't even rebuke him for this ! It was odd.
Miss Bose isn't normally so pardoning. I feared the quiet before a storm, and I feared her silence as much as her. Something was definitely going on, and I needed to know what.

After a couple of hours of me and Miss Bose working our asses off, and Neil dancing around the whole office like a free bird, I finally retired to our cabin for lunch. Neil came in after a few minutes, grinning ear to ear. I leaned in.

"What's going on ?" I couldn't help but finally ask him.

"What do you mean ?" He put down the coffee mug and the magazine he was reading, and grinned at me.

"Don't pretend as if you don't know what I'm talking about ! You know very well I'm talking about this attitude of yours. And what on earth is going on in Miss Bose's mind ? She didn't even rebuke you even when you laughed loudly that time in her cabin ! What's going on that I don't know anything about ?"

"I got a secret formula to make her quite." He laughed.

I pouted. I knew he wasn't going to tell me. He seldom told me anything. I figured that the secret will remain a secret, and so I didn't ask him further.

The entire day was pretty tense. But it was calm. Too calm. Except the times Neil almost broke the veil of calmness that was on Miss Bose's face. The entire day he did nothing productive except go around the office and disturb everyone working vigorously off their ass. Twice he accompanied me to Miss Bose's chamber (as is our protocol – the two secretaries have to be present at the time of meeting)  and he sat on the other side of the room, laid back on the sofa, while Miss Bose scowled internally while pretending listen to my presentations.

I rambled on about my presentation, while from the other side of the room Neil kept on reading things on his phone casually. At one point, he started humming some tunes and I froze im fear. Slowly, I looked over to Miss Bose, her face showing no expressions whatsoever, but if anything I have learned about her in the past 1 year I have been employed as her secretary, it is that it's the face she sports when she is most annoyed. I could sense her anger boiling when Neil shifted from humming to whistling, and I waited in anticipation...
Her nonchalant expression cracked a bit, and now her face was showing good amount of annoyance. Neil had no effect of this, probably because he was still stuck to his phone. He continued whistling and humming, ip until the point Miss Bose finally snapped,

"Enough ! Enough... I'm tolerating your antics since the morning, and I can't take it anymore. You're a nuisance ! You're driving me nuts ! You know what, go, go take a leave, please. Consider that I gave you a half-day off, but please just leave..."

Neil feigned innocence, "Am I bothering you Ma'am ? I didn't mean to disturb anyone.. Well if it really is bothering you then I have no issues leaving. You are, after all, our boss. Your wish, is my command." He got up and shifted towards the door, while Miss Bose glared at his back. Then turning to us, grinning ear to ear he said chirpily, "Have a good day !" He then quickly left, leaving me alone with the fuming Miss Bose.

"– Ahem... Ma'am my presentation..." I began bit she cut me short –

"Miss Sen, can you leave me alone for some time. I'm quite tired. Leave the presentation here, I'll check on them after a while." Her voice was calm but firm.

I saw no reason to stay and nodded quickly. I immediately sctulled out of the room. The last thing I saw, Miss Bose was slouched back into her chair, her hands gripping her hair, as the door closed behind me.
