"Momma?"

Melo sent a surprised look my way. I grasped the phone tighter and took a seat on the hot cement.

"Oh sweet baby Jesus! Finally you answered. How is my son?" Her voice trembled in fear as she waited for me to give her an answer. I hadn't heard from her in weeks and this is only time she decided to contact me. Because of Kyle.

I never did have the best relationship with my mother and it was simply because Kyle was all she needed. He was obviously the favorite. But could I blame her? He was the smart and talented son that could never do wrong. Whereas I was the accident.

They never told me to my face but I knew that I wasn't meant to be here. My mother was always disappointed with me no matter how hard I tried. When I was younger I was in a pageant but If I didn't wear the bright pink ugly dress she wanted me to wear, she would have taken me of the competition. Things like that were a pattern throughout my whole childhood. If she didn't get her way with me she wouldn't be pleased. So I kept pleasing her until I met Madison. She told me that I shouldn't let my mother dictate every single little thing I do just for her to love me.  Mom didn't like Mads that much.

But that's why I wanted to move in with Kyle so badly. He was the only one who understood me. Because dad wouldn't stick up for me at all. All he cared about was basketball and when I told him I didn't want to play, our bond broke just like that.

"He's fine for now. I was actually going to go up the hospital to check up on him today." Melo sat down next to me and mouthed 'oh really?'

I didn't tell him what my plans where.

"Well I'm actually on my way to Chino right now. I'll be staying in town for a couple of days just to make sure everything goes smoothly for Kyle. I know he probably wants to see his mother for a change." Sly and snarky as usual, my mother had to add in the last part.

"Alright, mom. See you soon then I guess. Wait, where's dad? He isn't with you?"

"No. I'll talk you soon, okay? Muah." And just like that the call was over. I don't understand why dad isn't with her though. He follows her around like a lost puppy most of the time.

"What was that about, shawty?" Melo grabs my leg and squeezes. The uncomfortable expression on my face must have gave it away.

I drag my fingers across my face and let out a exhausted sigh.

"It's my mom..she's coming to Chino for Kyle."

"But you don't seem to excited about it?" Melo was trying to figure me out.

"Well not really. This was the first time I'd talked to her in a while and she didn't even ask me how I was or how I am feeling." I shook my head.

"Damn, its like that with her?"

I just nod silently.

"Look at me, just know I got you. The rest of them folks is extra. I will always be there for you don't you forget that, aight? I love you."

"Okay. I love you too Melo." He opened his arms and I accepted willingly. My arms went around his waist, both my knees were on either side of him. I hated the fact that my mother and I's relationship wasn't the best but maybe God was just placing that love in someone else, LaMelo Ball.

"So why you ain't tell me you was trynna go to hospital today. I'll take you?"

"My bad. It was a last minute thing."

I lied.

"It's good. Go get ready then. Cause we finna go now."

"What if I wanna go like this?" I push back off of him and stand up dusting off my bottom.
