"Who can be here at this time?" Ella asked, scared.

"I don't know! But we have to open the door," said Emma.

They switched on the lights and slowly went to open the door. It was dark outside. They both looked out, but no one was standing there. Then, out of nowhere a bat flew inside.

"Agrrrrr," Emma screamed and ran inside, and Ella was right behind her. They both ran to their mother.

"Mom! Mom! A bat just flew inside the house! Mom! Get up!" Ella and Emma screamed.

"What!?" Violet said sleepily. "How did it get inside?"

"We heard a knock on the backdoor and when we went to open it no one was there, but a bat flew inside," Emma said, breathlessly.

"Ok, let me see it," Violet said and she got up.

The three of them went downstairs, searching everywhere for any signs of the bat. But it was seen nowhere.

"Are you sure that a bat came inside?" Violet raised a question to both the sisters.

"Yeah mom! We’re sure! It flew inside!" pleaded Emma, trying to make her mother believe them.

"Umm. The bat is not here now. We will search for it tomorrow. Now you both go to sleep," Violet said.

"But mom!" They both protested.

"No more talking! Go to bed now!" Violet ordered them, and then she went to her room.

"Emma, will You sleep with me?" Ella requested.

"I was going to ask you the same thing Ella," Emma replied, “I will come to your room in ten minutes.”

Emma changed her clothes and went to Ella's room.

"I am so scared that I won't be able to sleep tonight," shuddered Ella.

"Yeah, I won’t be able to sleep either," Emma agreed.

The twins both lied down on the bed. There was no light outside and the darkness seemed like it would swallow everything in its path. The insects were continuously making noise like a symphony of the night. The silence of the house caused every sound to be supernatural. The girls huddled together when suddenly, there was a strange noise coming from the attic. It sounded like a small thumping. The girls got closer together in fear of what it was.

"What is that?" Ella stammered.

"Could it just be the bat?" Emma suggested.

"Maybe! Should we wake up mother?" Ella said.

"But then she will scold us again," replied Emma. "We should check it on our own. Maybe it's just a cat. Let's go."

"But I’m scared," protested Ella.

"So am I Ella! If you are scared, then we will go in the morning," Emma said.

"Yes, that's fi.....," Ella was cut off by a loud creak from the attic.

"Ella, we have to go right now!" Insisted Emma.

"Alright, but you have to go first," begged Ella.

"Ok," Emma agreed.

Emma took a badminton racket and Ella took her cricket bat and they slowly made their way upstairs.

They started to climb the stairs and the wood below their feet was creaking which sounded louder in the silent house.

The lock on the attic door was already open. They slowly pushed the door, which creaked and they both went inside.

It was very dark inside the attic. Emma searched for the light switch. It was next to the door but when she tried to switch the light on, the bulb burst.

"Ahhhhhh,!" Emma cried as the glass pieces fell on her. Her hand started to bleed from the small cuts.

"Are you alright?" Ella asked worriedly.

"Yes but it's burning strangely," responded Emma.

"Let's go down and clean your wound. We will come back with Mum tomorrow," Ella advised.

"Yes!" Emma agreed and they turned to go back but the door slammed shut. When Emma turned to Ella, she saw a face on the attic window.

She screamed. The face was staring at her and grinning from the third-floor window.
