Before you continue, I have one question for you. Do you believe? Truly, believe? All those stories you were told as a child of monsters and fairies, trolls and prince charming. Do you believe? If not, I implore you to open your mind for just a few minutes. Sit down and let me tell you a story, a story of the Silver Dragon.
Long before there was the Hidden Leaf Village or Hidden Mist village, there were farms and small tribes scattered across the lands. Unknown to most, a creature slept deep under the earth. She was a peaceful creature at heart, unlike the other stories portray her. She helped those who would wonder inside her cave, offer shelter to those who needed it, guide others to the nearest settlement if they grew lost, but her kindness soon came to an end.
The dragon slept on a bed of riches. Her pillow consisted of the finest gold and gems. Her body rested on diamonds and rubies, anything you can imagine was buried in her piles. The gentle giant was content with her bed and wished to share her happiness with others if they gave her unique items in return. If she liked what you brought her, she paid you in two handfuls of gold and gems. Few knew of this trade so it her pile never dwindled far.
One day a thief sneaked inside, one of the boys she had helped over the years when he became lost in her cave. His familiar scent kept the sleeping beast from stirring as he grabbed bag after bag of gold. Tip-toeing around her, he dragged seven carts worth of riches behind him, sealing the fate of humanity along with his betrayal.
The gentle giant woke up some days later and jumped to her feet seeing so many things out of place. Piles were smaller, some of her most favorite gems were missing and the cave reeked of a man she once saved. Her scales bristled in anger and with a large, anger filled roar she burst out of her cave and descended on the tribe near by. Their only warning was the beating of her wings before she surrounded it in flames, letting no one escape.
Perching herself in the center of the tribe, the flames making the shadows dance around her; the people cowering at her feet. The Silver Dragon stood tall and proud before them and sent out a mental wave. "Where is the thief who stole my gold?! Where is the man who dared betray me?!"
"We do not know! He left our tribe soon after he returned with the large carts. We did not know it was yours." A man who looked like the chief stepped forward and bowed before her. "Please, gentle giant. We do not know, but we beg forgiveness for his mistake."
"If you can not bring him to me then you shall pay his dept, all of you humans will! I will not rest until you have re-payed me twice as much as I am owed. I will feed on your kind instead of the animals in the forests and I will burn any tribe who does not pay me my monthly due. Spread the word to everyone and those who dare defy me will face my wrath!" She roared up at the smoke filled sky making the humans drop to there knees, hoping to be spared of her anger.
Centuries rolled by and she was true to her word. Every village who refused to pay were destroyed soon after, burned down to the ground leaving nothing, but ash. She only let one survivor live to tell the story to the other tribes. The entire world was at the mercy of the once gentle dragon, her wrath scarring the world. Until suddenly the attacks stopped. Years came and went, the humans still scared she may return before one dared to enter her cave. To everyone's surprise they found it empty. No diamonds, no gold, no dragon.
The people rejoiced, singing 'The dragon is dead! The dragon is dead!' The celebrations lasted for weeks, even months, as the celebrated their new found freedom. The story went from battle tales, to lullabies, and slipped into legend before being forgotten all together. The dragon was dead...
Or was she..?
