|chapter three:: drunkenly sober|

"THAT dress is absolutely gorgeous," Marina told me and I smiled as she made me twirl.

"You do know that the birthday girl is the one that's supposed to be complimented, right?" I questioned, looking up from my baby blue dress and she chuckled, "Like, I'm not complaining but.."

"I hate how elegant this party is going to be," She stated and I looked at her as I put on my earrings.

"Hey, don't stress on it," I assured her, but bit my lip, "But, I'm not one to talk since I just spent my sixteenth at the club."

"Yeah, That's because you weren't making the family look like shit," Marina huffed and I walk over to her to grab her hands.

"You're not making anyone look like shit, Rina," I told her, but she held the frown on lips, "I know mom and dad don't want to talk about it, but-"

"But what, Adriana? You seen how they were at breakfast yesterday. Their lack of communication on it doesn't make the fact that I have HIV disappear." She ranted, looking down at her shoes.

"One time, I thought I was pregnant and I told mom about it," I suddenly say and she looked at me, "She preceded to tell dad and he looked me dead in eyes and called me a disappointment."

"Shit, you never told me that." She mumble and I nod a little.

"Yeah and then when I found out I wasn't, they both pretended like that scare never happen and that I wasn't a disappointment to them both." I shared, "I'm telling you this only because our parents push the hard shit away and cover it up with money until it's really gone- or at least until they think so."

"So we're just never going to talk about it?" She wondered, "We're just going to pretend like everything is perfect?"

I hummed, "Sadly, but this family does it best." She frowned still, so I grab her shoulders and shake her a bit, "Now, can we just enjoy the sixteenth birthday party I never had? Because if you won't enjoy it, I will."

She laughed a little and nodded, so I quickly pulled her out of my room with me and outside to the party. Guest flooded the backyard with their fancy outfits and suit and ties, but I furrowed my brows when I saw the new kids- Nadia, Samuel, and Christian- being the only ones not dressed for the occasion.

"Did they not know this was a formal party?" I asked Marina, glancing at her.

"They were all last minute invites," She explained to me. Clearly. I hummed lowly, grabbing a glass of champagne when the waiter walked past with them before sipping it slowly, "Please remember not to drink too much, sis."
