The Hero

When you look into your lovers eyes
I want you to see the pain in mine
When you look at the beautiful  kingdom that you've built
I want you to remember whose traumas it was built off of
You think yourself a great hero
Who finally reached the top of the mountain
You've struggled so hard and slain many a monster
When in fact, you let the monster slay your daughter in her bed
When in fact, the brightness of the prize you sought blinded you to the cries of your people
And when the night came and the cries got so loud
You lashed out at us with a whip made of poison promises
"These struggles will bring us to the holy land!"
You failed to see the hands holding our arms above our heads
You thought me hiding in the deepest depth of your kingdom
Was me being salted and nursing a bruised ego
What you thought were my selfish actions were me actually trying
To protect myself and those you considered family once upon a time
So when you look upon the new kingdom you reign
I wish you to see flashbacks of where you used to rest
With this new clarity you so claim
I want you to feel a monsters hand on your breast
To remember from where these riches came
