I sat on the bed in Anthony's apartment, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. Anthony was in the bathroom fixing his hair and brushing his teeth when Lin walked in.
"Hey, you've got mail," he said, setting a couple letters down on the nightstand. I set my phone down on the bed and casually peered over at the letters.
"For who?" I asked, picking up the pile and reading the name on the first letter. To the current resident....
"You, mostly" Lin said, fixing his jacket. "I think most of it is spam anyway. Doesn't concern me, it's your problem now," He said jokingly.
I laughed and glanced up at the clock on the wall. "Breakfast at ten still?" I asked, running my hand carelessly through my barely brushed hair.
"Yep," Lin said, turning to leave. "I'll meet you guys at the cafe. Ten o'clock this time." He said, a bit louder. We both turned around to watch Anthony's face turn pink in shame.
"Got it!" Anthony called back with a mouth full of foamy white toothpaste. "Ten o'clock!"
Lin chuckled. "See you then," he said with a joking wink before walking out and closing the door behind him.I flipped through the stack of letters I had in my hand, tossing them on the bed next to me. Junk, junk, junk, j-
My eyes widened as I gripped the envelope, causing it to crease. I wanted to jump up and scream.I felt Anthony climb onto the bed as he scooted up behind me and put his head on my shoulder. "What's that?" He asked, trying to peer over my shoulder at the letter gripped so tightly in my hands, as if I was afraid of what was inside.
"Nothing!" I yelled and shoved the letter up my shirt. I immediately regret trying to hide it from him. I was going to have to tell him what it was.
"What," He chuckled as I got up and he sat up straight. "Is it from your other boyfriend?"
I couldn't help but laugh as I slowly pulled the envelope from out of my shirt. "No no..." I spoke slowly and I couldn't bring myself to look into his eyes. I just kept my attention on the tiny letters that spelled out my name on the envelope. "It's from a school I applied for." I paused, taking a big breath. "I don't know if I'm accepted-" I saw him shoot up off the bed excitedly and wait eagerly for me to finish. "- but if I am, I will have to leave and go back to New York."As if he didn't hear the last part, Anthony shot up off the bed and almost tackled me. "OPEN IT, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?" He yelled excitedly, look as if he was about to explode.
"Okay okay," I laughed and flipped the letter over, carefully sticking my finger under the flap and slowly ripping it open. I removed the letter from inside and dropped the envelope to the floor. Anthony watched as I unfolded the paper and turned it over to read it."Dear y/n.." I read slowly, glancing up at Anthony who looked like a kid on Christmas morning.
I read the letter, slowly and quietly, the volume in my voice dropping off halfway through the first paragraph. Before I could even get through it, Anthony wrapped me in a tight hug as tears spilled down my pink cheeks.
