By now it was 2048.

And I knew it was wrong. My actions, that is. I also knew the consequences if I ever got caught. Still, I remained brazen and staggered on down into the darkness of Hanji Alley.

Stinking of malt liquor, I soon spoke to the towering doorman guarding the rear entrance to Boudoir - a gentlemen's den hidden among the dingy labyrinth of back streets. "Was I here?"

"As always, never," the enforcer said who tipped his head and got ready to buzz me through.

"That's still good to know," I said, and slammed my bent wrist into the man's concrete chest. He smiled, raised his own wrist, and his iDot deducted four digits of iCredit from mine. Like an eager child bundling into a confectioner to see the candied fare, I felt excited. And while listening to the faint wisp of electronic jazz, I breathed in the mixture of perfumes sweetening the air and scurried deeper into the brothel. Then after avoiding the glare of others seeking the same thing, I met a second man always seated behind a high mahogany desk. "The sadist returns!" Harvey mused. "Mr. Secretary, this is the third time this week, and you're becomin' quite the regular. But it's no surprise - our girls do offer the best twilight company in all of Běijīng."

"It's just, a phase," I said, shrugging my weary shoulders.

"Whatever, Xen, I've heard it all before. Now, as far as your nose is concerned, will you be wantin' the same as last time...? If so, speak up, or forever hold your perversion - had a few renegades in earlier who almost cleared out my supply of your favorite and vowed they'd be back for the rest!"

"Yeah," I said enthusiastically, securing my fix of Daredevil. "And, is, Candy available...?" I couldn't help but ask Harvey about my favorite girl.

"Nope. Sorry buttercup. She's still recoverin' from last night's visit. But don't worry, Mirage will be lookin' after your group tonight and she's a vet, plus pretty as hell."

"Okay, thanks," I said with a slight crease of a smile. I was disappointed but didn't say anything else. Instead, I allowed a substantial five-digit deduction from my wrist and was quick to loosen my tie.
