Driving home you mind was still on what had happened earlier. Once home you realized you’d have to tell everyone the news. You were worried about how they would react. You headed up the steps and could hear the voices of your family inside laughing and having a good time. You tried to figure out how to tell them the news.
Mom: “hi sweetie! did you have a good day?”
You “sure..” you replied
Mom: Holding a plate of cookies “I have these cookies for our next door neighbors.. Do you think you can take these over?”
You: “Mom..”
Mom: “Oh and Logan called he was looking for you. He’s so sweet.”
Mom kept rambling on while placing a few more cookies on the plate. You sighed.. this was hopeless.
You: “Mom!.. I have cancer.” this was not how you wanted to tell it at all but the words just slipped from your mouth in the craziness of the moment.
Suddenly as if You had said a bad word, everyone froze and the whole house grew quiet. Mom dropped her plate of cookies and you heard the sound of the cookies crumbling all over the floor. Your sister stopped singing and turned and looked at you with giant frightened eyes.
You started to cry and your mom was crying too and then you began to explain between sobs what had happened today. Your family was devastated with the news. Nobody seemed to know what to say, they just all hugged you and cried together. You looked up into the sad eyes of your dad and he reached out and squeezed your hand
Dad: “We’re going to help you get through this sweetheart.”
Your mom just sat there and sobbed and softly was heard saying ‘it can’t be.. it can’t.. not my baby girl..”
After the whole shock of the moment, you announced you were pretty shaken from the day and was just going to go to bed. You went upstairs and crawled into bed but you couldn’t sleep. You lied there for hours and hours and finally managed to fall into a restless sleep.
