"Always greet everyone you walk past!"
You finished dressing up your usual, perfect dress assigned to every female in the land. It suited you. It suited everyone.
The black and white patterned dress hugging your curves elegantly, but at the same time, it was appropriately presentable.Tying your hair in a bun, you slipped on your shoes and wore your usual, perfect smile. Everyone can smile! Everyone should smile! That's what makes this city so perfect. You grabbed your things, opening the door to see everyone already in a straight line, off to work.
"Good morning lady (Y/N), just in time as always. Such a lovely day, don't you think?" Mr. Patters, moving aside for you to merge in the line to work. He was your kind neighbour, always so kind enough to move aside for you to merge in the line. He was around in his late 60s, yet he was such a loveable old man.
"Everyday's always a lovely day Mr. patters, except today's a more chilly one." You both share a warm laugh, cheerfully walking as you follow the straight line to work. Everyone had one job to help the city thrive. By being productive, it's easy to say that everyone's perfect.
It was as if your legs had a mind of its own, nonchalantly leading you to your usual office to help be a part of this lovely society. It had always been this way for as long as you could remember. Your eyes wandered off to admire the tall buildings you walked past, seeing people big and small rush to go outside and get in their respective lines. In the midst of your strolling, you caught sight of a young child struggling against the ever-so kind government. "Such a pity, manipulated by the ways of criminals at such a young age." Mr. Patters mumbled. He always had a soft spot for children.
"What is he even wearing?" You laughed, seeing the child wear such horrifying clothes and strange tones of colours. What were they? Too bright for her liking in all honesty. Utterly horrific to look at. "It's so...ugly."
"Now now (Y/N), we shouldn't be talking about those rebels in the first place. We should leave those matters to the kind government." Mr. Patters commented, holding onto his suitcase as you both continued following the line.
Yet your eyes lingered at the boy's sorrow filled figure, tears rapidly rolling down their cheeks as they continuously rebelled against the officers. Nobody was allowed to be sad. It was disgraceful. But you couldn't help but feel sympathy towards him. Seeing the officers take him away somehow felt...wrong.
No! You shouldn't think about these things at all! You can't afford to be.. a rebel! Not when you were so close to getting promoted to a much higher position. But you can't help it. All your life, you felt as if something was missing. As if everything was wrong. As if...you were out of place. How silly of you to be thinking this nonsense, What would your friends think? They'd laugh at you for thinking such nonsense.
Now with the boy out if sight, something caught your attention. Something that wasn't meant to be there, something that just.. managed to be seen in the corner of your eye. That wasn't there before. You memorised the City's ins and outs like everyone else. You stopped in your tracks, your eyes never leaving the alleyway. Mr. Patters gave you a look of sympathy, for in his eyes it seemed your were staring at a wall.
"Oh dear." He muttered, for he knew it was the end for you. You stepped out of the line. He kept walking, not wanting to look in your direction in any case that the government decides that he was a rebel too, associated with someone who dared turn their back against their perfect society. Nobody must associate with a rebel. You would lose your dignity for doing such treason.
You slowly approached the alleyway, walking towards it. The other side seemed so bright. Had the government made a new park? Entranced by the light, she'd forgotten about the line behind her for moment. Until she no longer heard the cars honking, the sound of the trees, people chattering. Just a ringing noise.
You swiftly turned around, your pupils dilating as your blood run cold. It was sealed off, all that was left behind was a red brick wall. "What...What's going on..?" You felt confused, scared, and all these jumbled emotions rumbling inside of you.
"MR. PATTERS! MR. PATTERS? PLEASE, IS ANYONE THERE?" You called out. Was this punishment for not following instructions? You continuously banged on the wall before calming down, realising that it was no use. You looked behind, The blinding light. Take a small step forward, you shielded your eyes with your hand and walked towards the light. There had to be someone who can help you in the other side.
You had to go back home, you needed to go back home. It was the only place you knew.
As you finally reached to the other side, your eyes were now adjusted to the light. Blinking, you took your time to take in your surroundings. It was all so...bright.
It took your breath away, a feeling you've never felt... at all. You've never seen so many colours other than Black and White. Call yourself a rebel, but... this feeling.. it was like no other! As your shoes touched the concrete, you felt the breeze hit your skin, your hair flowing with the wind as leaves went in your direction. Until it hit you. This wasn't your city. This wasn't your home. You quickly snapped out of your thoughts, seeing no line in sight. As a matter of fact, nobody was in line! They were going in their own direction. Was that even legal? Was any of this permitted at all?!
One was going on their own pace, and then the other were children running and goofing around. Then the next, you could see people sing and dance on the streets. But the strangest part of all, they don't look like people at all in the slightest bit. Strange vibrant colours and signs were on their faces, as if they were flags or something. What was going on?!
You panicked, your heart racing with adrenaline with a familiar feeling of fear overwhelming you. You needed to sit down. You needed to think. You needed...needed... "Pardon me madam, but are you alright?"
You yelped, flinching as you turned around to see a tall man (he looked like one at least), wearing a nice white long sleeved shirt with a black waist coat to nicely compliment his outfit. His Tophat and monocle suited him, giving him a classy, old timely look. Yet what was odd was the union jack flag was plastered on his chiselled face. You had to admit, he looked rather charming despite his...odd look. Yet this flattery wasn't enough to calm you down.
"W-Who are you?!"
"My dear, perhaps I could ask you the same thing?"
