Time Waits for No One - Chapter 1

As the sun began to set, Michael took the opportunity to go sit on his front porch and watch the sunset, he began to day dream as two young ladies ran by for their evening run, watching the sky change different colors his mind began to float away, as he day dreamed about his closest friend, memories began to force their way into his daydreams. “Michael come on let’s go play outside!” Called out Marlon as Michael jumped up from his bedroom floor and grabbed his jacket, 5 years old and he was ready to go play in the summer sun. “I’m coming Marlon here I come!” He screamed as he ran down the hall way of the petite 2 bedroom home. “Okay let’s go!” He cheered as the two young boys ran out the door while their father Joseph was at work, and their mother Katherine was inside helping their older sisters with their school work. 4 young girls were down the street screaming and laughing, 3 of the pretty girls were jump roping while the fourth one sat on the curb reading a children’s book and eating a small bag of candy. “Come on Michael let’s go play with them!” Marlon said as he grabbed Michael’s hand and the two of them took off running down the street closer to the girls. “Hi!” The girls grinned and giggled as Michael and Marlon approached closer. “Hi! I’m Marlon Jackson and this is my little brother Michael Jackson can we play with you?” Marlon politely asked as he introduced himself to the girls. The girl sitting down looked up and saw both the boys then glanced over at her three sisters. “Hi! Sure I’m Georgia, this is Toni, that’s Sharon, and…” Georgia stopped and looked over at their sister, “that’s Nikole” she said with a slight snarl. “Okay! Do you guys want to play tag?” Marlon asked sweetly, it was quite obvious that Michael was more timid than Marlon, Marlon had proven to be more outgoing, especially when it came to the opposite gender. The girls nodded and giggled, “I’ll be it!” Yelled Toni as she ran up and tapped Sharon on the shoulder, “you’re it!” She screamed out loud then took off running as Georgia, Toni, and Marlon split up in different directions. Michael shook his head as he sat down on the curb beside Nikole. “What are you reading?” Michael asked softly as he peeked over Nikole’s shoulder. “Well I was reading Dr. Suess, he’s like a poet, do you read Dr. Suess?” Nikole asked sweetly as she looked up from the book and over at the boy on the side of her. “Would you mind if I could maybe read it with you?” He asked shyly as he searched her face for an expression. A wide smiled spread across Nikole’s face as she moved closer to Michael to share the book with him. Quickly moving Michael got nervous, and scared, he wasn’t easy-going around girls. “Nikki! Nikki! Do you want some lemonade?” Nikole’s mother called from the house, Nikole looked over her should and saw her mother. “Would you like some lemonade Michael?” Nikole asked before getting up and leaving him alone in the hot Indiana heat. Nodding his head he said yes in a soft tone. “Okay come on!” She smiled at him as she got up and reached for his hand, running inside with the book and Michael she wanted her mother to meet her new friend. “Mommy this is Michael Jackson he is my new friend I saw him outside” Nikole announced as she walked into the house with Michael. “Well hi there Michael Jackson I’m Diane you can just call me Momma D okay suga?” She said in a thick southern accent. Nikole’s family was originally from Louisiana. Marlon was still outside with Georgia, Toni, and Sharon while Michael was inside with Nikole and Momma D. Nikole took Michael to the couch after her mother poured them some lemonade and gave the book to Michael. “You can read it if you want” she smiled at him, Michael gently took the book from Nikole’s petite and soft chestnut colored hand and opened it. He began to read it silently to himself. “Michael…can you read it to me?” She asked as she sat beside him, nodding Michael began to slowly read the words to her, just as he was getting the hang of being in her presence Marlon ran to the door. “Michael..Michael come on we gotta go Joseph is home!” Marlon said breathlessly as he called out to Michael, jumping up Michael got off the couch. “I have to go bye bye Nikki” he said softly to her as he let go of the book and ran off, “thank you for the drink Momma D” he said to Diane as he slipped out the door, and ran down the street with Marlon to get home before they got in to trouble. After dinner and bath time, Michael climbed into bed along side Marlon, but looked out the window at the midnight blue sky watching the stars. “Michael what are you thinking?” Marlon asked as he looked over at his brother. “Nothing I was just thinking maybe Nikki can be my friend…my real friend” he whispered as a tear ran down his face as he continued to wish on the star that gleamed in the sky.
