Chapter 9

I had put off telling Caroline that I was ditching the party for as long as I could- about an hour before the party started. Not having the lady balls to tell it to her face, I had just settled on texting it to her so that I didn’t have to watch her reaction and feel like an even bigger bitch.

My phone started vibrating, though, and what I had thought was just a text back from Caroline was actually a call. That just ruined the whole point of texting her instead of saying it to her face. The pain in her voice would be all that it took for me to just want to break down.

Sucking it up, I hit the answer button on my phone, knowing that I had to get some courage some time. I couldn’t just ignore her call.

“Hello,” I answered, putting the phone to my ear and leaning back against my pillow as I relaxed into the comfort of my bed. Hopefully that would make me feel better.

“Slutmuffin!” she screamed into the receiver, sounding only slightly offended. “You’re skipping out on a party? You do realize there’s free alcohol there, right?” she asked me, sounding astonished that I was still not convinced to go.

“I know, Caroline. My parents are still on lock-down,” I told her easily, flinching at just how easy it was for me.

“Alright, well then I’ll just come over and spend the night; no outrageous activities involved, just a girls’ night,” she told me simply, no longer mad that I was ditching the party. Wow, she was turning down free, crappy beer for me? She must really love me. “We can watching Mean Girls! Oh and She’s the Man! And 17 Again! Definitely 17 Again, because Zac Efron is the sexiest thing alive,” Caroline started gushing like the true teenage girl within her. Had to agree with her about Zac Efron, though.

“Okay,” I agreed, my voice going up an octave due to the fact that I was well aware that I was in some deep shit for agreeing. How was I supposed to deny that, though?

In reality, my parents had let me off the hook with the grounding and they were definitely far from being on lock down. It was more like they were going out now more often because they knew I was able to go out now that I wasn’t grounded.

Hence why I had invited Nate over. It had been a great plan; my parents were probably renting a hotel room for the night and I was going to have the house to myself. But now it was going to be Caroline as well.

How was I going to explain this to Nate?

“I’ll see you in like half an hour,” Caroline informed me, reminding me that I was still on the phone with her. “I’ll bring the movies with me, by the way. You go get some good, fat, movie snacks for us to share. You know I love chocolate! Bye!”

She didn’t even wait for my response, she just hung up on me. I was still staring up at my ceiling with wide eyes, racking my brain to figure out how in the hell I was going to figure out this situation. Why does this always happen to me? Honestly, fate hates me.

After I finally came to my senses, I drove over to the closest store to buy two 6-packs of monster energy drinks as well cheese puffs, Hershey’s kisses, popcorn, sour patch kids, and twizzlers. I hated those damn things, but for some odd reason Caroline was in love with them. Barf.

As I arrived back into my own driveway, I was thankful that my parents had decided to stay in tonight so that my excuse for not going to a party was valid. Grabbing my bags I made my way back into the house hollering to my mom that I was home and that I was going upstairs.
