“So how’s the training going?” Bryce asked me as we sat down for lunch. Usually we ate lunch separately because we had different schedules but we hadn’t dined together in awhile because of how busy we had both gotten and I kind of missed it. It had been almost two weeks since we’d gotten back and I was training Charlie and Anne along with the rest of the new recruits which we seemed to be getting daily. Bryce had been put back on guard rotation and had also been recently put in charge of weapon maintenance by Sargent West who apologized but said he needed someone he trusted.

It was a rough schedule and it was putting strain on all of us. We were tired and worn out and somewhere in the back of my mind I wondered if the king new about our plan and this was how he was combatting it. Tire us out and we can’t do anything to stop him. I barely had enough brainpower to do everyday tasks let alone plan his demise.

“It’s going well. I’m as tired as are they are but we’ve been getting by. What about you? I haven’t been able to work with you in a while.”

“Yea I know it sucks, but it definitely makes coming home to you a lot nicer though.” He smiled at me.

“Coming home to me?” I laughed.

“Well, our bedroom.” He laughed with me.

“So the king passed another law.” I told him.

“Really? What was this one about? Wait, what was the first one about?” he questioned.

“I never found out what the first one was but this new law has to do with owning and buying firearms and other weapons. He’s restricted everyone’s access to them as well.”

“Honestly I’m not sure any are even left on the market. He’s been ordering so many new weapons it’s insane. Overseeing the checking of them is the worst, it seems like nobody can do their job and I have double check everything and look after people. “ I winced; it’s why I hated working over people. I could never trust them to do the job as well I knew that I could.

“Yea, I’m not even sure that the people want weapons but having the access to them, being able to buy them, is something that I know they would want the option of and he’s taken that away from them.”

            “What’s the new restriction?”

“Only former soldiers can own weapons and ‘weapons’ includes firearms, knives, bow and arrows, anything that could traditionally be used to kill someone basically.” I explained.

“Wow, I wonder why he gave the former soldiers power?”

“I don’t know, maybe he has leverage over them or something. I just hope that he doesn’t do any thing else.” Bryce agreed with me in the form of a nod and we finished our meal talking about better things.

When we finished eating, I made my way down to the practice fields to start yet another day of training with the new recruits. However, once I got down there I realized that today would be a little different. The king would be joining us. I knew that because the usually covered bench was missing and it seemed to have been replaced by a lavish bench covered in red velvet with two attendants waving giant fans at a currently empty chair. I made my way to the storage room to find West. When I did, he was checking weapons in the back room, I approached him quietly and he freaked out when he turned and saw me standing there.

“Holy crap!” West jumped about half a mile into the air and laid his hand over his heart.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
