✧༺♥༻✧

It was a few days later when Juno saw the new girl again.

The sun was harsher than normal, probably because summer was readily approaching. The temperature was getting higher and despite having endured much higher temperatures, Juno still disliked it.

Her sisters and the other kids were playing outside, seemingly unbothered by the hot weather. All they cared about was catching the other and tagging them.

Most of the kids were her sisters' age, but a few were older. Juno had even seen Carl, Mr Grimes' son, look at the kids, maybe wondering whether or not to join in. Carl wasn't that much older than Lizzie.

As she looked at her sisters playing around with all the other kids, a shiver went down her spine when she very obviously felt someone's eyes on her.

She was getting better at this, her father had said. She'd been able to talk in front of all the kids without stuttering too many times and whenever Carol asked something of her, she could answer with determination in her voice.

But being seen by someone without wanting to be still made her nervous and anxious. And when she sneaked a gaze, she saw it was the new girl.

Juno focused her gaze back on her sisters, sweat forming on her forehead as she tried to control her breathing. Was there something the girl saw? Had she done something wrong, without knowing?

Thoughts were racing through her head of what could've possibly caused the girl to look at her and it all went overboard when the girl came over and stood right next to her.

Juno's breath hitched and she tried to keep looking at her sisters, smiling and playing happily for the first time in a while. It helped calm her nerves, but her throat was still dry and she could feel how sweaty her palms were.

"Hi." The girl spoke softly. Juno was surprised to hear that her voice was harsh and not at all like, well, a girl her age.

Not answering would be rude, but she wasn't sure anything would even exit her mouth, even if she tried.

Juno cleared her throat, a bead of sweat finding its way down her face. "He-hello."

The girl said nothing else for a while, which gave Juno the opportunity to catch her breath and try to come up with answers she could give to any question the girl might ask. To be prepared and not embarrass herself any further.
